They'll have to raise taxes on it, it's not unsolvable. Politically it may seem so, but it can be done. And yes they can be progressive taxes (rich paying more). No one wants to be the one to vote to raise taxes, that's why they are kicking the can down the road. Problem is, the longer they wait, the more they'll have to raise payroll deductions (essentially taxes).
@thechieflegofanatic9194
Жыл бұрын
@@jimmym3352 They can also raise the age to receive benefits. Again, it’s not a retirement program and shouldn’t be used as such. As I said, increasing taxes comes with its own downsides. Namely that how much one receives is based on how much they pay in to the system. So, increasing the taxes also leads to an increase in benefits paid. The cap was put in to place because those making over 165k aren’t likely to need SS, so it’s also a bit of a cap on benefits. As was pointed out on the show, the ones living the longest and and receiving benefits the longest are also those who are wealthier. So, we increase the taxes on the wealthy, but also significantly increase benefits paid out. Other options: increasing the actual tax rate, increasing the age to receive benefits, phasing out the system for younger workers, allowing the trust fund to invest in riskier, higher paying assets, etc.
