Being a union member I can tell you that there was a period where the unions were overreaching in their demands. I can also tell you that is no longer the case. We want to make a living and to be able to support our families. Somehow conservatives have painted union as wanting too much and making the US anti-competitive in the world; that average worker salaries should not be based on a minimum amount, but the lowest amount a manufacturer can get away with paying - while still giving bailouts and low interest loans to corporations and the wealthy that far exceed that of all those workers combined. We need to change people's minds about what unions are and what they actually do for the common worker.

I'm not anti union by any stretch of the imagination, but I find your first sentence and fourth sentence to be kind of weirdly out of touch with your points. Unions went too far but conservatives painted them in his light somehow? Sounds like unions did that on their own, or at least gave conservatives the ammunition necessary to make the argument. To be fair to your argument, I am sure conservatives didn't provide a nice nuanced and balanced approach to this and didn't overexaggerate anything at all, surely not, but unions kind of did this to themselves and if they are getting back to more real "for the worker" negotiations then great, but like Tim Ryan pointed out, perception changes slowly. It is going to take time to rebuild that reputation after decades of corruption and focuses on politician lobbying by union leaders and heads.

With regard to workers and unions, Tim and Batya are BOTH right. Tim is correct that Republicans have been working to diminish and undermine worker rights and unions for DECADES. But Batya is also correct that Democrats have all but abandoned them -- not just over immigration but because they've switched their focus from economics to demographics. They've become obsessed with "minorities" and "diversity" and have almost entirely forgotten courting WORKING CLASS people (their former base), REGARDLESS of color or demographic category.

Not correct on that second part, because unlike republicans, the Democratic party has actually proven it can walk and chew gum at the same time to be able to try to help ALL of the demographics you've just listed (minorities. diversity, working class, etc). Just because the republican party wants to make everything an either/or "win" scenario in SUPPOSED favor of their voting base over their opposition doesn't mean it's automatically a "both sides are just as bad" situation that means Democrats do the same thing. But understanding this reality requires the capability to compare what republicans SAY to what they actually DO when proposing/passing legislation.

Yeah, she had them flustered a couple of times. Apparently she didn't have all of her facts right (according to the commenters here), but i definitely agree on the class issue, because that is clearly what is happening, also here in Holland. My colleagues come from diverse backgrounds, but we share our 'social status'. And it has been more than obvious that the higher educated are preferred, their mindset is what chased comedians like Seinfeld and Maher away from college and uni gigs in the first place. I'm sure Bill has connected these dots at some point, but yeah, he fails to fight for it, which is why he never gave Bernie his full support among other things.

Dr. Phil's claim is entirely accurate though. It has been demonstrated by numerous socioeconomic census surveys that people taking out welfare benefits are far less fiscally responsible (hence their need to take out those benefits). One needs to look no further than the stats about poor folks who suddenly became lottery winners, then became broke in a matter of years and often months because of frivolous spending habits. It's grim, but you can't fault the data for being inaccurate here.

Unions were fine when they performed a positive service, but a lot of large unions nowadays are merely supplementing their necessity by bringing strike actions for more pay and benefits, instead of realizing that the high prices of labor is the main reason that large corporations have LEFT the US for cheaper labor. It's a fact that companies are in business to make a profit and if they don't, then why be in business. That doesn't mean they can run amuck over workers, but there are plenty of non-unionized companies that pay a good to great wage. I regretted seeing the union come in to the company I was working for because I took a $1.60 an hour pay CUT, not an increase!

Yes, except schools, and other civil services. But record millions and billions in bonuses to the top 3 or 4 executives in a company while people are having two incomes and barely making it is wrong. @sanandaallsgood673

@@lisab9541 Well, since schools and civil services are NOT 'for profit' entities, I believe this is a non-starter. Also, many people who are having the two income families are also caused by the need to 'keep up' with the Jones and the toys. Granted, that is not ALL people, but many fit this bill.

She has the facts wrong about the Teamsters-they haven’t given the RNC $45K. I’m a Teamster and we just had a meeting the other day. The $45K is still sitting on the Teamsters desk. They explained that it’s just put aside so the Teamsters can attend and have a presence at the RNC convention. They feel it’s important that we attend and have a presence of members at both the DNC & RNC conventions this year. $45K is just the amount put aside to make that happen at the RNC convention. There’s another amount put aside for the DNC convention too.

Just last week a bunch of Google contractors made a union in Texas and demanded better conditions from Google. Google just laid off the entire team… Ironically while they were speaking publicly about how great they all did for forming a union to “speak truth to power”. … Well you spoke to power and power spoke back… Don’t get mad when it says something you don’t like. Everyone in the west has a consensual relationship with their employers, they don’t owe you a job and you don’t owe them your value. If you don’t like it, market your value somewhere else. I guess this is what happens when education changes focus from value to emotion.

Trickle down economics never made it down to the workers, another stance that sounded good and the track record since shows who the real winners become. Have the workers wages and benefits increased as much as profits since then?? I think the data shows everyone the answer. Unfortunately that’s still not enough. The voice and reach of those with money will always silence those with less. The voices of those with less when collectively sticking together will always be louder.

A problem with unions is many of them have stopped protecting workers. I can give a specific example. During covid the unionized workers at Krogers were up for contract. Krogers was making record profits and in desperate need to their staffs. The union caved and gave up pay increases, but also gave up some healthcare benefits as well as reduced the retirement program. Just a year ago they come up for contract again. AGAIN the union caved and the workers saw full time jobs decline, insurance become more of a mess and retirements cut back further.
