In this tutorial, I will give an overview on Microsoft Network Load Balancing (NLB), then i'll install and configure the NLB feature on windows server 2019.
Steps:
1. Make sure your static adapter settings are configured properly on Server 1, server 2, and testing client (all in same subnet). Also, have running web servers (IIS) on two of your windows server machines.
2 install Network load balancing ( NLB) feature from Server Manager or Piwershell.
3 . Configure NLB cluster by adding new cluster.
4. Add DNS record ( host A) for the cluster.
5. Test the NLB from the client PC.
What is cluster?
•Group Of Independent servers interconnected with dedicated network to work as one centralized data processing resource.
•Cluster improve system availability for the user, it is aggregate performance and fault tolerance.
•Cluster distributing the workload of network across all connected network.
What is Network Load Balancing?
The Network Load Balancing (NLB) feature distributes traffic across several servers by using the TCP/IP networking protocol. By combining two or more computers that are running applications into a single virtual cluster, NLB provides reliability and performance for web servers and other mission-critical servers.
Hardware requirements
All hosts in the cluster must reside on the same subnet.
There is no restriction on the number of network adapters on each host, and different hosts can have a different number of adapters.
Within each cluster, all network adapters must be either multicast or unicast. NLB does not support a mixed environment of multicast and unicast within a single cluster.
If you use the unicast mode, the network adapter that is used to handle client-to-cluster traffic must support changing its media access control (MAC) address.
Software requirements
Only TCP/IP can be used on the adapter for which NLB is enabled on each host.
The IP addresses of the servers in the cluster must be static.
Installation - You can install NLB by using either Server Manager or the Windows PowerShell commands for NLB.
Terms and features of NLB:
Availability
Servers are often assigned service level agreements (SLA), which specify the level of availability those servers or services must maintain.
Fault Tolerance
To make a server more fault tolerant, you should first look at what components are the most likely to fail and implement technology to make a system less likely to fail.
Heartbeats
NLB is able to detect the failure of cluster nodes by sending packets known as heartbeats.
Convergence
When a node is added or removed from a cluster.
Configure three types of parameters:
Host parameters - Defines what each node can do in an NLB cluster.
Cluster parameters - Configures the NLB cluster as a whole.
Port rules - Controls what ports the NLB cluster services and how requests are balanced across all servers based on the port and protocol.
Affinity
Determines how the servers are going to balance the load. Use affinity settings when you use multiple host filter mode.
Filter mode
Specifies which hosts can respond to requests.
