What dyes, finishes and other leatherworking chemicals do you use on your projects?

I've been using inks as a dye and it has been working very well. I apply it with a paint brush and it has allowed me to blend and create gradiants. I tested it with wax boiling and Neatsfoot Oil, and haven't seen any color-fast issues or bleeding yet.

Awesome! I've never thought to try using inks, but the idea sounds really interesting. What inks do you use? Do you have any pictures of a piece dyed with ink?

I just use India Inks. I figure if they dye my skin they would probably work on leather.

Lovely video! and yes, the sound quality is great!! One quick note. Alcohol won't eat through plastic cups. I think that third sealer you mentioned may be some manner of lacquer base. Happy Leather working!

Thanks for making this video. Is Carnauba cream enough of a finisher/sealer for oil based dyed leather? I’m starting to make wallets and belts and have Smiths leather conditioner but I don’t trust it enough to use is as the only finisher. I’ve been doing this: dyeing > antiquing > sealing with Satin or Super Sheen > adding Smiths at the very end for a shine. I would rather not use Satin/Super sheen because it leaves the leather a bit sticky and not as smooth. Someone told me I should research “proteic binders” to add to the dying mix when dyeing which anchor the dye in the leather. If this actually exists, and all I have to do after dyeing is add conditioner, it would look and feel sooo smooth.

I have a black leather car steering wheel in my VW Golf which has areas which are a bit worn. Can you please tell me what type of leather this is, and how I can touch up the worn areas to match?

Clearlac sounds like shellac to me. I wonder if that's what it is with a few extra things in the mix.

What about Angelus dyes? They have colorful dyes as well. Have you used them before?

After dyeing and putting carnauba creme, does the dye stains clothes? Or Bleeds?
