Thank you Josh, this is great. Lisa here (caregiver) I know Pivot tables are basic but for me it is often trial an error. And I have questions: Why in 1st pivot table do you have 2 Identical columns? Q2: [Just a comment] Also, I really like how the pivot tables answer questions from the source data, and I think it would be great if that particular question was provided at the top of each pivot table. Q3: Do you start projects by defining - with the client - what questions do you want answered? Thank you and I looked at Alteryx it seems very powerful.

Hey Lisa! Great to see you here on KZitem. So the pivot table with 2 identical columns is used to create that line chart with the nice blue gradient beneath it. One series of data is used to draw the line and the other identical series of data is used to draw an area chart with the blue gradient. Generally I do start with a set of questions to answer or even start by writing out what I think the client needs to know and then (with pen and paper) sketching out how I think I would communicate that through visuals.

Now is serious question. 😊 why some people prefer to use simple charts to pivot charts for their dashboard?

It’s often because they don’t want to have to deal with refreshing the data but sometimes people just don’t feel comfortable using pivot tables because they aren’t super intuitive.

Thank you 😊 I find pivot charts easier to handle in terms of updating and handling information, no complicated formulas sorting etc, while just charts you really need to build complicated transitional tables to be able to extract information. I’m trying to understand if I need to use charts or pivot charts for my first dashboard that will be carried over month over month and probably even data from previous years will be added. I’m using power query and pivots to analyse and sort the data. And now I’m watching course about dashboard build on simple charts, it’s quite interactive but all those index matches, offset etc functions look overwhelming and I think why not just old fashioned pivot tables? 😊 that’s my thoughts flow, I even asked ChatGPT about it 😅

High Josh, thank you for sharing this amazing work with us. I just had a quick question. My total sales for year 2005 and 2006 are totalling $931417.61 instead of $$693,027. What do you think I am doing wrong ?

It’s possible that I just made an error in the original template. But make sure you’re checking the filters. It’s possible that it’s just an aggregation issue too. I’ll take a look when I have a free moment. Thanks Alfred.
