Interesting and informative video. I think it’s important to remember to factor in your stature when considering boards / truck setups. I’m 6’2” and I enjoy riding Carvers but when I let kids and petite female friends have a go they, like you, find it hard work and unresponsive. If you’re smaller in size the carver might work better for you on a looser setting and with softer bushings but still it probably isn’t the best fit for you. Height, weight and stance width make a huge difference in optimising what works for you.

Yeah you’re absolutely correct. In that regard I had to give my opinion based on my experience. Still after a year plus and big improvement in my own technique I find the carvers difficult to perform especially snaps etc. while some of my surfer friends ride mostly that. But I probably should have mentioned my petite size 5’3 110lbs. 😂

Yep- I actually transitioned to the yow myself. I might film that later in summer. But I would at this point recommend the yow over the swelltech. Definitely for beginner and definitely if you plan to practice in skate park. It’s still loose but not at watery as the swelltech

Lot of useful info, thank you! Also on Carver these seem to be the concave wheels which are very grippy to be suitable for snapping.
@ALLaBOARDvideos

Yeah. Well, carver has a few options for wheels. Now I’m doing more surfskate in dunes and bowls and surely I see some really good riders on carver. But- Personally, I’m not a fan.

@@ALLaBOARDvideos yes, I agree, for me (reviving my 80-90-s teenage skating hobby in mid-40s in 2019) and my wife who never skated Carver was a decent stable start, which then felt limiting after we've progressed to YOW and Swelltech, Ripstik and Freeskates. I guess Carver is also more difficult to snap as you can't get enough of the deep deck lean for enough grip.
@ALLaBOARDvideos
2 жыл бұрын
Yes agreed. Although like I said you can find some amazing ppl doing snaps in carvers. I will release a video soon for snaps- unlike what most people think snaps are not really about the tilt of the board or the weight shifting. It’s mostly about the commitment in the twist of the upper body. Then you can slide any board even with very little speed
@Rideables

@@ALLaBOARDvideos slides and snaps are probably also not for everyone :) In my current mid 40s, having only pumping skill, I've learned some front-side pivots, jump-switches, pumping switch and fakie riding, at a cost of few bruises and x-rays. Since then switched to LDP, practicing pushing regular and mongo. I'm not invalidating Carver, it's a valid, solid and capable brand. What do you think of Waterborne, besides that it's too tall and heavy?
@ALLaBOARDvideos
2 жыл бұрын
@@Rideables Well, to be honest I truly believe almost everyone can perform snaps, as long as they learn the right technique. Hope I can help with that, it'll be coming soon... This is partly why I'm doing this channel - to bring something for everyone regarding of their skill, age, and/or ability. As long as we're healthy- so take care of your body :) Carver is for sure a solid board, one of the best. Just a matter of preference and approach. I haven't tried Waterborne yet, so I can't really comment on that.

hello, very good video. it's all relative really, some people feel good about Carver. others with Yow and others with Smoothstar or Slide. I have tried them all and I love Smoothstar. when you can try to try Smoothstar 👍🏼👍🏼
@ALLaBOARDvideos

yep- I totally agree it's personal. Some of my friends love their Carver but even after I gave it even longer practice time, I still found it too stiff and resisting, unlike any surfing experience. Have heard great things about the SmoothStar- hope I'll get a chance to try it soon.

As a surfer I can totally see your gravitation toward the sweltech, I’m not a surfer and I don’t think I would dare! Lol! just curious, did you try to loosen the adjustment bolt on the carver?
@ALLaBOARDvideos
2 жыл бұрын
Haha. well, it's not about daring but honestly more about habits and goals. I would say that you can do anything with both. After all, Carver is probably the most common surfskate brand. I have a surfer friend that prefers the Carver, but!!! he did not give the swelltech a fair chance. As for you question, I most certainly did. As I was trying the board that week, and even while shooting, I loosened it several times. Honestly I didn't make much difference for me - the trucks are just built differently and Carver trucks will never behave like the Swelltech. For better or worse :)

Can I just buy that trunk to my regular penny board?
@ALLaBOARDvideos
Жыл бұрын
hmmmm... you can def buy just the trucks but penny board??? won't work. Deck is way too small, you need more surface. Specifically Swelltech only fit their decks (although one can always make modification to decks and make them fit)

What do you think about Smoothstar compared to those two?
@ALLaBOARDvideos
7 ай бұрын
To be honest I haven’t had the chance to ride smooth star enough to give it a fair opinion. It seems like a great board to practice surfing. I will say that I’ve added Yow to my quiver, and I Love it. It’s the best of both worlds- loose than the carver, but more contained than the swelltech. I find it to be an amazing tool for both riding and practicing surf

yooow! I've been riding Yows for a while and I need something more radical for my surf training. Which Swelltech model would you recommend for a 1.85m 80kg surfer? Thank you very much!!
@ALLaBOARDvideos
Жыл бұрын
Hi! yeah SwellTech is def a fairly radical skate - but I must admit I have yet to try the Yow so I cannot compare. Heard they're awesome. In any case, the most radical Swelltech boards would be the Pro models. The Pro Air is going to be very snappy and super short, but with the 20.5" wheel base I think might feel too small for you. they also recommend it for smaller riders, although it's just a recommendations. Personally I think the Pro Tube would be the one to go for - it has 23" wheel base so better for your size, but will still give you the flexibility to maneuver like on a shortboard. Now- if you mostly surf midsize boards, then you could go for one of the Hybrid series boards, but def wouldn't give you a "radical" and snappy feeling. Hope that helps - let me know if you have other questions.

Are you riding your swelltech in a bowl? I am wondering how would it feel like
@ALLaBOARDvideos
2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I actually recently started riding in a park and the bowl. It’s definitely looser- more of a “water”-like board compared to some others so it does require a bit of getting used to the looseness. But then it’s great. Getting a bit practice and will be have video coming soon. Basic technique including dealing with that issue
