toooo be fair, not that I'm excusing this, but that one game could have been a very close 25 minute match that they put a ton of effort into, it could be their 8th loss in a row, they may have done amazingly but one guy on the team was basically sleeping, etc etc. It's just a game, but it's a game people are really invested in and get, well, "emotional" about

For me the secret to improve in anything is: Do it a lot, like play an entire week of overwatch, hours peer day And them, keep somedays off. When I get back, it will feel that I'm realy bad, but in less than a day I'm a lot better that I was before. I learned this in the Gym, because it felt that I couldn't get bigger numbers on the bars (power lifting) and started to do this I need to give time to the brain and body to sink up all that I learned and them go back to it, or maybe some days off just make me relax, I don't know

In the gym? Yes. But in the other aspects is more about stressing to much about something and just take a little pause to be more efficient. When you reach a plateau and feel like you're not getting better, take a break for a week at least, purge and come back. Every time I was about to rank up and kept losing I took a week break, came back and ranked up immediately. Right now I came back after a week and got my McCree game back and learnt Genji after a day in the practice range and I'm ready to progress and get to diamond. Anyways, thanks.

I simply took a week off from OW and when I started playing again, I kept winning until I hit Diamond. It's gotta be a very small change in the way I play, but the effect on my SR is just...huge. So yeah. to anyone who thinks they're stuck in ELO hell, please don't give up. Keep your head in the game and keep trying to improve. You'll get there eventually. :)

Even 6 years and one sequel later, this video is incredibly useful and relevant. The thing that always scared me about hitting these flat lines in the curve was that I thought that the flat lines would extend out forever for certain people (namely myself), meaning they'd reached their skill ceiling for the rest of their lifetime and that they would literally never get any better. But it just couldnt be further from the truth. Even if I were to step away from the game for months, I could come back to it at any point, get back to my original skill ceiling and as long as I put in the time, I would transcend my current skill, hit a new peak. One skill ceiling isn't the end of the road. It's a journey of hills and bumps along a mountain, not a plateau that never gets any higher.

I'm glad you mentioned "flat lines." I tend to get very frustrated if I don't feel like I'm learning anything or improving as a player. There are certain things I "changed up" a bit, but it was related to ergonomics (have been slowly and gradually working sensitivity down and now starting to pivot from elbow). I'm less frustrated with this, since I know it will help in the long run. If I try to find something small to improve upon when I play it tends to help since my mind is on something else. Instead of being focused on teammates or that we just lost two games in a row, I might think "good, I landed sleep darts much more consistently this round and interrupted a key ult with it. If I keep focusing on this for a while I will get better."

I finished my placement matches the other day (fresh level 25 jumped into them), those games felt amazing. 2 out of 10 matches were among the worst games I ever had in overwatch. (Couldn't play straight, team picked without tank and heal, I switched to heal but couldn't weather the enemy onslaught, it was horrible) The other 8 matcheres where nice. They gave me hope. They made me believe that I would enjoy playing ranked for the first time in my life. Got ranked at slightly above 1700 and thought "ouh .. that's a little high for me. Don't feel like I deserved that.", but the game had an easy fix for my thoughts. Every single match I had afterwards, was like the 2 I mentioned earlier. No one even TRIED to play as a team. No one cared if there where any heal or tank characters picked. No one cared for anything but their own damage output. It was worse than quickplay. I droped almost 700 points and now I am where I would have thought to be before I was placed higher. Thing is. I don't enjoy it. I feel like I am bad at the game, that's ok. I can try to learn, but I don't want to learn in an atmosphere where no one seems to care if the round has a chance to begin with. I don't want to "fill pick" every single time because no one else seems to care. That's what realy frustrates me. The learning curve is a beast I can barely tackle due to stuff like that. It may actually lead to me droping Overwatch.

That's totally my perception of the skill curve. I was struggling alot in silver elo until I decided to spend 12 hours in a row in custom game and then in quick play to improve my aiming until I was satisfied (basically until I reached the same accuracy as pro gamers). This single training was enough to put me from silver to platinium in 3 days. Then I stopped climbing for a while and found other weaknesses in my gameplay (mainly by watching high elo streamers). Everytime I manage to find and fix my mistakes, I climb until I find new mistakes to fix (and it takes me quite a bunch of time to fix them). Then I spend alot of time trying to fix those mistakes and I climb again (and now I'm diamond). I can totally see this "staircase curve". Very nice video, keep it up !

Nicely narrated sky! I was ranked bronze after s3 placement, and then i had an epiphany with d.va and go on a streak to 1800 where I got stuck again. Not only that, I feel that my gameplay isn't expanding and I even feel I get less creative with d.va. That is until suddenly I had another epiphany with Reinhardt. I used to not be confident playing him, but I guess after hours and hours of d.va, I now know when to mentally flip the switch of "shield my teammates" to "kill everything in sight". I'm starting to climb again now.

I can vouch for this. Ever since I started playing competitive, I've experienced the epiphany and flatline. Getting from low gold to plat, from plat to diamond (which took me four seasons, after just barely missing it at 2994 in season 3), and from diamond to masters. Even within the ranks I experience the learning curve, bouncing between the lower, middle, and higher parts of every rank. After almost 5 full seasons, 3 of which I played on console, I can definitely say that the epiphany and flatline are exactly what give the "illusion" of ELO hell for players trying to improve.
@JVIPER88

Your learning curve is definitely accurate. In my attempts at getting better with Tracer, I've had several distinct "epiphanies" and corresponding plateaus. As of right now, I find that I've plateaued with her for about a month now, without seeing much improvement, and it has gotten a bit frustrating... Other characters with which I play often see improvements come much more regularly and rapidly for some reason.

my experiences are as follows: me, not the best at FPS games, goes into comp for season 3 (because i got high silver in season 2, only because i went in late in the season) and got 1040~ bronze. not that happy with it. i try to climb out on my own, Rule 1 of Comp: DON'T TRY TO CLIMB ON YOUR OWN. i dropped to 800 in a matter of a few hours of playtime, and i mostly play support like Lucio. eventually i got into a group of people in my SR and i climbed up to 1147 ( or somewhere around there) not out of the pit, but close enough to see it as an achievement. i keep going because i need to push through and fail endlessly to see any improvement, i didn't gain any new skill, or got any better as Lucio, i just did my best, and that's what matters: You Did Your Best. It's interesting how many of the players I play with have been at a pretty high skill rating constantly through the game but don't improve. I was ranked 47 or so at the end of season 1, climbed to diamond in Season 2, and made it to Masters in Season 3 through just experimenting and learning. Some people say Season 3 just bumped up everyone and while that may be true to an extent, I know a ton of people who ranked what they ranked last season and did not climb to the next tier, despite playing ranked all the time. It always comes in bursts, I'll just suddenly move up ELO, so this is pretty consistent with my experience. However, I do see incremental improvements from game to game in understanding what I did right and wrong (even if my ELO doesn't go up) and the most improvement comes when I'm very deliberate about trying a strategy out playing some character.

One of the biggest things I've been working on lately is to stop trying to chase down heroes. For the longest time, I've had the mindset of if I see an opponent, it's magically now a 1v1 match. I inevitably overextend myself and rush straight into the entire enemy team and immediately die. picking more back-line heroes is helping me learn how to keep an escape route, stick with my team, and try to be aware of where everyone is, instead of getting tunnel vision and basically blindly running into a ridiculous situation. It's such a basic thing, but I have a feeling that a lot of people have this mentality still.

Hey Sky Line, Big fan; I have been playing Sombra, in and outside of comp and I have discovered a new play style for her. and the minor problem I discovered is that she is only useful for the people she is against. For example, If there is a dive comp on the opposing team and you are on Route 66; she will be completely shut down, almost making it like a 5v6 making her a crutch to your team. the method I would for sombra is only use here when you know she will be viable, some prime example coincidentally are maps like Dorado or Voskia are great maps for sombras mobility and a good Sombra should keep the highest ground to maximise hack capeabitliy. Use with the hacking is mutch like Roadhog, but more selective. usually, you would save you hack for a highly defensive tank like the diva, Reign, and basically, anyone with game-changing abilities like Zenyatta is a good example; because if you hack him not only are you preventing ult charge but you will also be minimizing the opposing teams: health pool and damage output. wich allows your team more chance for succes. But the main beef I have with Sombra is not the damage or the hack time but the overall unreliability she has with those, which basically makes her hack and cloak like the old hook of Roadhog all I think she needed to be a viable character is polish, and more mobility. I think the frustration isnt coming from that curve but this combined with another curve, that shows ur simple knowledge and not ur skill. All the moments, when ur knowledge curve is higher then ur skill curve, u will think ur bad and get mad.

this makes a lot of sense, every season I would be stuck at diamond, or equivalent in season 1, but towards the end of the season I would clime all the way to top 500.

Skyline's in one of those flat lines where his drawing isn't improving :P Jk, love these vids, I'm pretty sure you've improved my gameplay in overwatch by 300% and more importantly you've made it fun again as I've changed my goal from gaining SR, to simply doing my best, having fun, and thus making myself a better player. Thank you!

I'd be interested in seeing you do a video (or, I dunno, maybe you already have done?) on the knowledge-ability curve in Overwatch. The frustrating feeling of knowing how you should be playing or what your hero is capable of, but being unable to execute it in a match - or, conversely, doing really well without really understanding why.

My method is simple, when i hit a plateau. . . I change thigns up. I notice at different SR's people tend to struggle with different roles. For example, right now where im at, people cant heal for shit. but the DPS seems solid, people seem to be getting kills and are able to take objectives. But specifically Ana is usually played incorrectly, so i play ana. Simply to allow her to be played properly and avoid having someone else pick it. At each elo ive been at, i've noticed a trend. People tend to be bad at specific roles / heroes. So my method of climbing is to play what other people are weaker at, to ensure a stronger team.

I coached my friend and it was visibly obvious that she was better than a lot of people her level. I taught her how to take out a bunch of heroes as soldier as well as how to use his ult and how to increase chances of winning in team fights. She's just passed level 28 and is starting to experiment with Zarya and Lucio (i main genji so we were trying to use the synergies) but she also managed to pick up reaper by herself and she's pretty damn good at him for her level

I flat lined recently when trying to learn tanks as I was an Ana main for a long while and wanted to diversify and spent the longest time on Rhine and just could get into a groove. I recently made a real effort to try zarya and oh baby am I glad I did I think I have now found my new "main"

I watched your video about angles in Overwatch. At first it got me less kills but as I started to get the hang of it I've been dying less. Now I just need to translate this into winning more games instead of sucking a little less.

my experience is to not rely on anyone to play decently at anything. when they do its a pleasant surprise but I should just try to carry them by playing support or dps and never tank. because they dont pay attention to tanks and you cant get them to stay behind you. if im support i'm zenyatta, lucio or ana and im booping, discording, sleeping and nading all important targets in the hope that the enemy doesnt focus me because im clearly not going to get help and need to just keep myself safe. if im dps i'm going to focus those healers then the pharah/soldier/mccree, then everyone else. that simple order of target selection is a giant issue in lower-mid elo along with positioning and being aware of enemy ult charge vs your own and how much you let them hurt you. these are my daily struggles. then ofcourse you get a diamond who fell 600SR and thinks he is a god. or one trick hero mains who only play hanzo, genji, tracer, and then fail to be effective all match because that 1 trick playing costed them to be good at any other tricks you learn to use on all heros and swapping that knowledge across all your play. for example positing and target selection on soldier and zenyatta, tracking on zarya, resource management on dva and rein, cooldown management on Ana and Pharah, movement on Lucio and Genji (etc,)

Kudos to you for bringing your thoughts to text, I can agree with all of your points. What I realized in Platinum and Diamond is that a lot of people overestimate their skills. They think mechanical skill is the only thing you'll need to be good at the game and they completely neglect things like map-, team- and enemy-awareness, positioning, ulti-economy, attack- and escape-routes, target-prioritizing. It happens so often that people overextend, die and then ask "Where the fuck is the team?" And I think to myself "Not knowing where your team is is your first mistake". If he had any awareness at all, he would have known where his team was and he would have known that he should have retreated, should have waited a couple of seconds for the engage, should have baited that enemy-ultimate before engaging. But it's a common theme, overestimating themselves, then blaming the team. The more support you play, the more you're realizing those things, especially when your team doesn't group up, 4 people are strolling all about the map, everyone crying for healing, nobody protecting you from the enemy-flankers and everyone blaming you for being a bad support while you're waiting for your own respawn. Those people are not terrible people, they just have no awareness at all and they don't have the feeling they need to improve in any field of the game.

Thanks for the video. You have a good point about watching videos... maybe i've been watching too many videos rather than playing as much. Although I did spend a weekend playing with a friend who wanted to go against bots, I actually really enjoyed it even though it wasn't the most beneficial way to learn, but, it allowed me to experiment a lot and it was very fun. But thank you again, keep making the vids. I feel like I recently reached an epiphany that increased my accuracy. I agree in concept with the idea of your learning curve. It kind of reminds me of 'Dark Souls' which is still a little different.

So what I'm actually currently doing to deal with this skill curve spikes and whatnot is actually taking a bit of a break from the game. This has worked for me in other games where I hit a bit of a wall in skill, my current techniques and strategies aren't working for the next level of play, and no matter how good I get at them they can't seem to get over the hill. So I take a break, make a point of not playing for a bit, then I come back to the game. One might think my skills would atrophy from not playing, and to some degree that's true, but what I find happens with me is that when I come back after a break I'm better able to analyze new ways to play. As I start getting used to the mechanics again I reassess my strategies and break free of my prior patterns of thinking. This break from my preconceptions and assumptions clears the path for me to climb over that skill wall and learn higher level strategies and techniques. Since I'm not as conditioned to use the inferior techniques I've grown used too I don't have to fight quite so hard to change them. I'm curious as to if this works for anyone else or if it's just me. Does anyone else manage to improve their skills through NOT playing/practicing?

The single most helpful thing you can do to improve your overall ability as a player has to be recording your own games and then reviewing the footage yourself (or submit to a friend/coach if you can). Yes, even the bad games, or at least the least worst of those lol. I'd say let some time pass, don't immediately start watching a game you played 5 minutes ago for best effect :D Additionally, try to make a conscious effort to think about everything that went wrong/right, what mistakes you made, what you could definitely improve on, what you think you did right and so on... Think about positioning, map awareness, mechanical skills, don't just watch passively is what I mean. Finally, don't be too hard on yourself (or your teammates), accept that it takes time for it to sink in and translate to actual improvement, and don't give up ! :D If you can do that, you should see a dramatic increase in your performance by comparing the latest batch of footage VS the original one featuring less experimented version of yourself lol. Good luck, don't tilt and have fun :D

I have to strongly and immediately disagree with the matchmaking isn't "broken and luck based" bit. My skill rating isn't phenomenal by any means, but a friend and I were put into a game recently where the other 4 people on our team were still doing placement matches and the highest level among them was like 50 or so. Against a team with 6 people who were all placed in the tier above my friend and I, and all with at least one prestige level or more. Sure prestige doesn't necessarily indicate skill, but it still absolutely means they all had SIGNIFICANTLY more experience with the game in general than the 4 placement players. Now the stupid thing was that the other team weren't even grouped together. So the matchmaking COULD very easily have put two of the placement players on the other team to even things out significantly... But no, instead my team got absolutely stomped to the point where it looked like a quick play game where a 6 man team had queued up against a bunch of solo randoms. A few of the placement players on my team apologised too. Which is probably what annoyed me the most honestly simply because it wasn't even their fault... It was the fact the 'works fine' matchmaking fucked up so monumentally that it put them into a match up that made them feel so bad they felt compelled to apologise. And when the enemy team getting the easy win is also commenting along the lines of "This matchmaking...", etc, something is all sorts of not right. No amount of spin in the world will convince me that the matchmaking isn't "broken and luck based" when it does things like this, even if instances like that are few and far between it still means the matchmaking isn't actually on point like people would have us believe. I don't mind losing, most of the time I still have fun at least, but man... When you lose 20+ points from a game when it's COMPLETELY out of your hands like that? It genuinely feels like you are being straight up cheated, frustrating doesn't even begin to cover it.
