This was a great show - thanks for the review - I just wrapped mine. - I stapled a black plastic (trash bags) skirt around the base - if you had a 16 inch height hive stand, it would be around the legs of the hive stand - but (with some small gaps) it does not completely block the airflow - just heats it up a bit (in the sun), so the bees can *break cluster* and get at their food during cold days. It also helps to damp down some of the larger wind gusts from blowing up under screen bottom board. Yes, I'm going to need to feed them more - because they are warmer, but its well worth the trouble. - ideal temps are 40-50F (for lowest food consumptio, but here in Massachusetts, we're already in the 40's and 30's, - and we usually get below 0F in Jan/Feb - so these girls need all the help they can get. - I subscribed!

Hi tony,,another great video and plenty og good tips, just to add i also use the polystyrene on crown board but i find it useful to cut out a small section to accomodate fondant just incase i feel their light on stores,the piece i cut out can be put back in place when not in use,always worked really well for me,also tony i do like your jacket and hood could you please tell me where you purchased,best of look with the over wintering,👍

Very interesting information video.The bee keepers on our allotment site use the top bars hives and not the national type.Also used caster sugar treatment against varroa mite.would the treatment and the weather proofing be available for the top bars.
@simplifygardening

The treatment is the same and this weather proofing comes in 8 x 4 sheets they just need to cut it to fit the top bar

Lovely to see a bee video. I felt the need to express serious concerns however. It's apparent you were no using any PPE (full face masks etc) when treating by oxalic acid vaporization. this is extremely dangerous and showing it on you-tube no only dangers yourself but others who could copy it. The gases severely damage your lungs if breathed in. Also Mite away quick strips are formic acid not thymol and can be used with honey on the hive, and then kill varroa inside the capped brood cells, although in my opinion MAQS have a high tendency to kill the queen. in addition using oxalic vaporization i thought wasn't advised when the hive has brood(so any time other than winter). All the best.

Katherine, You are right, Although I was wearing it for the actual spraying and voiced that bit over. But it was very unresponsible of me to let folks think that you didnt need it. I forgot the words formic acid while filming and left the thymol for the Apiguard in, I dont like Maqs or Apiguard tbh, I have great results with the oxylic acid and I have never had an issue using it at all times of the year. It doesnt get into honey and have had honey tested for any traces of it before I switched over completely

Hi. A question about the wall! Do you think that the wall, over winter, will reflect the heat or radiate it? Would a dark wall be a better 'heat sink' or would it be better as a lighter block or stone to be a reflective mass? Hmm. Ta for the video once again!
@simplifygardening
5 жыл бұрын
The wall even though light will still hold heat and release it at night. It also acts as a wind break which is more important

If you're in the UK are your winters reasonably mild + short? From what I've heard, I have sense in the UK, more so than than North America, the need to an upper entrance is more debatable. Check out Tom Seeley, Peter Jenkins, Meg Seymour thoughts on the subject in their national honey show lecture. In my experience in Canada, particularly if you tailor the size of your hive to the size of the cluster, they eat less honey + stay dry if don't allow their heat to chimney out the top.

Wales get very cold and wet. Condensation is a massive issue without that top entrance we would lose over half our colonys. I know because i tried it without for the first couple years
@beekeepingIsGood
5 жыл бұрын
It was actually a man in Wales named David Heaf who convinced me to stop using upper entrances. Peter Jenkins, who I mentioned above, is also in Wales. If I recall correctly, David seems to report snow drops blooming in February or so. We don't see those till April. If you had issues with moisture it's likely a problem with the hive design + an upper entrance may not be the optimal solution. Do you know what race of bees you have? That might play a factor too.
@Nellyontheland

I'm also in Wales, and I think it depends on circumstances and location. I have dry, windy areas and moist almost dank areas. But over all Wales is very moist unless we prep for it! Steep valleys might not see the sun hit their north sides until spring as the sun is so low.

@simplifygardening
5 жыл бұрын
Bees in the spring and summer around 6 weeks and during the winter can be upto 5 to 6 months but they are doing no work then, The hive can be with you for years as its constantly renewing providing you look after them and look for disease

What about treating Varroa mechanically ie by using icing sugar?
@simplifygardening
5 жыл бұрын
Yes a lot of folks do this, But if you want to treat during winter thats much harder you have to open them up and then dump a load of sugar on their heads and they may not be able to clean it off due to colder weather

You're brave not wearing gloves working so close to the bees. I wear my gloves all the time but my son doesn't. He's been stung on the hands so many times that now he considers it as bee therapy to help him feel better. I take it that the wall is to your windward side?
