It doesn't make sense for the right to focus on young voters. People tend to become more conservative as they get older, so the Tories don't need to appeal to young people because the Tory supporter base is wider. If they had policies for young people e.g. raising taxes for social services, then that would hit the middle-income households who disproportionately support the state and vote Tory, so they would actually lose votes overall. That was the reasoning that I inferred. It's not about being out of touch, it's about getting enough votes to win.

Unfortunately even with those changes, they still can't afford property where they grew up even with combined incomes of £80k, they're still unable to get a mortgage over £300k. Owen Jones is a likeable character, and pretty intelligent, but speaking as someone who leans left of centre, he gets it wrong on identity politics IMO. He should focus more on closing tax loopholes for the uber rich, renationalising utilities and the railways and creating greater opportunities for the young working class. Too many on the left are fixated on dividing people into tribes based on arbitary identity traits, like race, gender & sexuality, when in fact what a true solcialist should be doing is promoting the idea that we are all as one within a society, and not implying that certan groups should have special protections and rights. This approach causes division and resentment, which some would say is a deliberate tactic, but I'm inclined to think it's more born out of stupidity and a desperation to be seen as 'modern' and down with minorities. In their own way, the left lack pragmatism and vision a much as the conservative right do.

In the economics profession systems are defined by their method of production, for example: Slave> Master - slave system Lord> Serf - feudalism Employer>Employee - capitalism. It does not matter if it is the state who is the top down employer, or private. They are both forms of capitalism, state capitalism, and private capitalism. en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/state_capitalism 3. 80% of the Venezuelan economy is private capitalism, with the remaining 20% made up of state capitalism and some democratic socialism. 4. Further example of how it is utterly stupid to think X government = X economy. China has a communist government with a 40/60 split state and private capitalist economy. 5. Venezuela is not a dictatorship. The right have been repeatedly invited to stand their candidates at election. They refuse because they know they are far from the majority in the nation. One of their leading figures did stand at the last election and he was reprimanded and forced not to stand by his own damned side, because if he did and lost, it breaks the narrative the mostly right wing private billionaire owned Venezuelan press spins to our press. 6. Is is a shit show? yes, but for none of the reason you've had your mind manufactured into believing. So it is fair to say, as one Conservative interviewed here says, that we can't honestly say what it was like before Thatcher. However, I have been to the Labour Party conference, and I have met a lot of socialists, both in the UK and outside the UK, and many of them _were_ around at the time, and they still consider that socialism is a good principle. If the postwar consensus shared by both Labour and Conservative governments between 1945 and 1979 was basically a bad thing for all involved, then older people in the Labour Party would not exist. Yet they do!

Socialism. You mean like: schools, roads, NHS, police and fire brigades, clean water & sewage systems, food and drugs quality and safety assurance? I mean, look at the HELL HOLE of Scandinavia. You can't have a dialog about "socialism" when it's confused with "communism". They are NOT the same thing. Even Communism wasn't what it was purported to be, it was a distraction as one privileged aristocracy was replaced by another. Give me Denmark's ability to maintain a high-standard of living while balancing taxes, social services, and capitalism.

Socialism works worldwide and has done for the last 100 years. Soviet Union, Cuba, Vietnam, Korea, China and so on. Elements of the left wing ideology prevalent in capitalist nations, such as nationalised health service and the like, are some of the most popular pieces of infrastructure in the world.

It's quite frustrating when tories talk about how they were 'given nothing' and had to work their way up by the bootstraps. It's always tories of about the same age- 60's-70's. Born as the beneficiaries of huge social mobility after the second world war. They've benefitted from the Marshall plan as children, high taxation of their parents during the 70's, a universal NHS, cheap borrowing in the 80's and 90's. The trope of how they did it all 'on their own' is total bs. They have been helped every step of the way by those that came before. That's how it should be- life should and does get better with each generation despite the efforts of the tory party.

The woman at 4:10 really annoyed me. It's the fact that young people work hard and yet still can't afford to actually "make something" of themselves in a traditional sense (own a home, start and provide for that family like the older generation could do on a basic wage) that's pissing younger people off. Young people work harder now than ever before for far, far less. Older people have bought second homes and rent them out at extortionate prices, preventing young people from getting on in life, then blame it on us for being "entitled". No wonder there's a committee for intergenerational fairness, because my god, this situation is just fostering a massive sense of disillusion between generations.

I find it almost humorous how these young, rather clueless, ideologically driven, liberal arts, etc college/University educated/indoctrinated tools really seriously, imagine that they are actually working class. The Labour party have had little truck with, interest in, or ideas to help the actual REAL working folk of the UK. The ones who actually DO get on with shit, and build, manufacture, maintain, repair, clean, cook and keep this fucking country actually going. Whilst entitled, spoiled, whiny wet behind the ears little shitehawks like Owen denigrate, belittle and look down on normal people, who have known fuck all but hard graft and tough lives. But Hey! They are now old. So fuck 'em. What do they know. They didn't get our "education". LOL. I would love to see Owen and his ilk actually have to do a real job of work. I doubt they would last the day out. Send the wanker's on a North sea oil rig, or North Atlantic trawler, or a small building site,or down the pit, if we have any left at all. The last election I very, very nearly voted Conservative for the first time in my life. I could not bring myself do do so. However, as things stand, I can never foresee me voting Labour again. Things would need to change markedly. And I'm not talking about going even more Socialist/Marxist/Communist. And I'm certainly not talking about going more ridiculously PC, feminist, open borders, and anti free speech. The real working class of this country, and the mid to lower middle class really are stuck between a rock and a hard place to shitelately, and have been for some time. Ironically, it will be the self same grafting toiling working folk who will have to dig in even deeper, to get us out of any shithole we end up in. Again. But then who else is there to do it? To put in all the graft again? I doubt it is going to be Owen and his chuckling, giggling chums. Yet remarkably, and utterly unself awarely he sees himself as being totally the opposite of the Tory posh boys. He is at best the other side of the very same coin. And the similarities and parallels are quite startling.

The youngish guy @2:20 makes a good point - a lot of people I know who lean more towards conservatism do so because while they agree with the ideas of the left and socialism (we have a lot socialism in our society) as the end point believe the type of radical steps often proposed are too big and come with potential negative impacts where as if small changes are made over a period of time society can slowly adjust to them.

We have socialism for the rich in this country ie cutting taxes for the richest and corporations and yet on the other hand we have capitalism for the poorest like years of austerity and crippling benefit cuts to the sick and disabled people which has led to hundreds of suicides and we have a ultra right wing government who have an obession with privatising everything in sight and the NHS is half way there already and not to mention royal mail which will be foreign owned before long just like the water industry which is 70% foreign owned and has paid out 18 billion in profits to its shareholders and increased bills by 40% and spent virtually nothing on infrastructure and the same goes for the energy industry which is predominantly foreign owned and has also seen bills skyrocket and in fact I don't know of any other country that is as foreign owned as our so called great country is and our capital city is now basically the world's biggest tax haven were we allow corporate crooks to avoid taxes in the billions while our poorest people have to go to food banks makes you so proud doesn't it.

You can't lose something you never had. Young people just weren't voting before Jeremy Corbyn was nominated for the Labour leadership. I expect that the Coservatives' base of support among young people is about as large as ever, it's just revealed as the relatively tiny minority of the age cohort it always was.

Your critique and analysis of the party at the end there is accurate and well made. However, what it also illustrates, apart from the obvious crisis facing the conservatives, is just how much of failure Corbyn's labour are. To still be unelectable when this is the alternative is a damning indictment indeed.

Trade unionism of the 70s combined with other factors might of caused economic problems but let’s not hide away from the fact that 2008 banking crisis was caused by neo conservative bank deregulation privatisation and greed. Unfortunately for labour this happened during New labours time in office when they largely followed a conservative economic model. Then absolved of blame they blamed labour for the whole tower of cards falling down.
