In an effort to record the atmosphere around the nest at dawn, I set-up just before 6am the other day. This is the first part of what we saw that morning.
The first 5:21 is a serene but noisy scene around the nest tree as the sky begins to light up. Many bird sounds to be heard - including dad owl, Ricky, hooting (no less than 20 times in this clip!) but with no reply from mom, Mathilda. By the end of this first wide scene however, she was already preparing breakfast for the owlets having returned during the recording.
Did you see her fly back in? If not the next clip of just 3 seconds is when she flew back to the nest (edited with heavy crop and artificially increased exposure); following that is the same clip slowed down to 1/4th normal speed showing her deft 'hover and drop into the nest' maneuver. (If you missed it in real time and true exposure, it's at about the 1:27 mark of this video)
After she had returned and was preparing the morning's catch (behind the right trunk branch), the owlets were keeping an eye on something else outside the nest. I didn't see it, but must've been a concern as during the last 2:12 of Episode 1, mom just kept peeking out.
Eventually we see the owlets begin to mob mom so they could start eating. But that concern wasn't going away and soon it was also obvious that one meal wouldn't be enough for our fast growing owlets.
Stay tuned for Episode 2 dropping soon!
