I never understood why anyone would own a lizard until today. I found a tiny hatchling and rescued him from a large postal box I have on my porch. I'm researching all I can find. He seems very slow and skinny. I've become rather attached, in just a short amount of time. I've always been afraid of the large ones, but I had to pick this one up to get him out. I’m not sure which enclosures she uses. Although aim for a 40 gallon (36x18x18”) or bigger. You could use a glass enclosure (I recommend front opening) such as Exo Terra or another brand, or PVC (which is great but expensive unfortunately). Check secondhand sites for cheap used tanks, that’s how I got mine.
@nightinggale6470
2 жыл бұрын
@Setsuna Umbreon nope. A 20 gallon long is the bare minimum, 40 gallons is the recommended size. Leopard geckos can be quite active, and benefit from more room for a better temperature gradient and more enrichment. Most bigger reptiles need larger than 40 gallons. Care standards change and improve over time. Many things considered ‘standard’ are becoming outdated.

I just adopted a baby Leo on Thursday and I am completely in love! I'm not sure of the gender yet as they are only 2-3 months old, but I've been calling them "Mr. Stubbs" because they are currently regrowing their tail. 😆 I was a fan of your videos even before I got Stubbs, but since then they've been invaluable to us! I currently have Stubbs in a 20 gallon long with reptile carpet substrate, a log hide on the cool side with a log bridge stretching from the top of the log to the entrance of a moss cave, a large piece of Mopani wood that I covered with moss in the center, several large river rocks scattered about for extra climbing surfaces, a water dish, and on the warm side a nice sized step pyramid hide with a realistic fake fern hanging over it. I have a heat mat under the pyramid, and an incandescent day bulb and a tropical UVB for light/heating, and I'm buying a ceramic heat emitter tomorrow for nighttime heat. I also have a dig box, calcium Dish, and poop tray on order from Stroodies on Etsy that should be arriving soon! I've currently been feeding him a rotating diet of small crickets and mealworms, with Calcium (no D3) and multivitamin on the schedule you recommended. I'm planning on adding small dubia roaches and grasshoppers to the rotation too! I'm just obsessed, lol. Thank you so much for loving Geckos and teaching the world how to care for them! ❤️

Just some advice: Carpet isn’t a good substrate unfortunately, it harbours bacteria and tends to get caught on their teeth and claws. It’s recommended to quarantine new reptiles on paper towel for the first six weeks to monitor their health. After, good options include zoo med’s reptisoil, a mix that’s 60% top/potting soil and 40% playsand (or a soil/sand/clay mix), Arcadia earth mix arid, or Terra Sahara from the bio dude. A dig box alone doesn’t offer much enrichment. I also recommend upgrading to a 40 gallon or bigger at some point. There’s likely no need for a CHE, a temperature drop down to 60 at night is fine. You don’t need the heat mat either. What brand is the UVB and what type of bulb is it (compact or tube)? Calcium dishes are unnecessary and can potentially do more harm than good.
@leahdresser2290
3 жыл бұрын
@@nightinggale6470 Thank you the advice! I was actually using paper towels before I got the carpet, I'll switch back to that for a couple of weeks then switch to reptisoil! I actually have a bag of it I bought for the dig box so that's perfect. It's so funny that you mentioned the 40 gal, because I was just browsing for larger tanks online last night! My birthday is in October so my bf is gifting me with one! Would you recommend anything bigger than a 40 gal? I did notice that Stubbs seems more active since getting the CHE, I hope that's not because it's too warm!!! I know I need better bulbs, they are just the typical zoo med bulbs that you find at pet stores. I needed something to start him with but I definitely need better ones. What would you recommend? I was thinking about nixing the heat mat, I went ahead and turned that off! Is the calcium Dish potentially harmful because of over-ingestion of calcium? The one I have is very small, holds about a dime-sized amount.
@nightinggale6470
3 жыл бұрын
@@leahdresser2290 definitely go bigger than 40 gallons if you can! Bigger is better, as long as you provide plenty of clutter he’ll love the extra space. The bulb I recommend the most is a PAR30 or PAR38 halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat, they’re the most natural and beneficial option. 50W is generally good for leopard geckos, although you might need a higher wattage for a larger tank. Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. Yeah, they can potentially ingest too much calcium with calcium dishes. A tiny dish probably won’t do any harm but also isn’t necessary, dusting on a schedule is enough :)

This might be a dumb question but does eco earth ever need to be replaced?
@nightinggale6470
3 жыл бұрын
Eco earth is not a good substrate. It’s unnatural, dusty when dry, hard on their joints, and more of an impaction risk than more natural substrates. Suitable loose substrates include zoo med’s reptisoil, a mix that’s 60% tops/potting soil and 40% playsand (or a soil/sand/clay mix), Arcadia earth mix arid, or Terra Sahara from the bio dude. You can go months without replacing it, just spot clean as necessary.

Provide him with a humid hide. If he has any stuck shed after (particularly on the toes), gently remove it.

I got a Leopard Gecko TODAY!!! His/her name is Yodah and this video was very helpful. though I should have watched this ahead of time bc his aquarium is a bit sad. with too much open space and no natural look to it and one hide. can anyone recommend be good brands on buying gecko supplies (not food, got to much, like hides and rocks) that are Cheap, not toxic, and have a natural look to them? Please ping me I don't get notifications otherwise
Question for anyone who can answer So I’m working and buying everything for my first leopard gecko and I got the deep heat projector but I can’t find any dimming thermostats that ship to Arizona and none in the stores. If anyone could help that would be amazing
@nightinggale6470
2 жыл бұрын
Deep heat projectors don’t need a dimming thermostat. They’re ideal, but any thermostat will work. Various sites sell dimming thermostats, herpstat is the best one. Honestly, I recommend using a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat as the primary heat source. The levels of infrared A and B they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength).

I’m not Rebecca, but here’s my view on it: I don’t recommend cohabbing leopard geckos to the vast majority of keepers. Most people go about it the wrong way. Many people who attempt it are beginners and inexperienced, and almost always have an enclosure that’s way too small. They have unlimited space to get away from each other in the wild, and an enclosure is comparatively very small. Often when cohabbed leopard geckos will compete for resources and stress each other out. I have seen countless cases of geckos fighting, even after tolerating each other for years. When cohabbing a male and female you’ve got additional risks of breeding and the male pestering the female. All that being said, I don’t have a problem with what JTB reptiles is doing. He’s experienced, has done extensive research, and has a good setup. To do it right you would need a very, very large enclosure (they need to be able to get away from each other when they want to), loads of hides (as well as loads of branches, plants, and other clutter), multiple basking spots, and to feed them separately.

We have a 3-4 month old leopard gecko and he doesn't poo on a regular basis. I feed him between 5-7 crickets daily and he is active and curious. Is this because he is settling - we have only had him for two weeks? He did start pooing everyother day at the end of the first week but then we added another hide and a plant to give him more coverage.

I have two rescue geckos and ages are estimated to 1-2 years for my female and 2-4 for my male. My female has stunted growth and she was malnourished and very underweight - do you have any suggestions to help with weight gain and growth?
@nightinggale6470
3 жыл бұрын
Feed her a variety of live, gutloaded, dusted insects. Crickets, roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Mealworms, superworms, and hornworms can be fed occasionally. Healthy adults should be fed 1-2 times a week, so I’d maybe feed her a bit more often than that (although be careful that she doesn’t become overweight). Are the geckos housed together?

@nightinggale6470

They’re very unlikely to drop their tail as long as you don’t grab it. You can start by handling them over their enclosure. Then, once you become more confident and they become less afraid, you can move away from their enclosure and hold them close to a soft surface.

I just got my baby gecko on Thursday night, and ive tried putting my hand in her tank to get used to my smell, but she opens her mouth wide and goes into a sort of defensive stance. Is it just stress? I've been leaving her alone other than doing that at night. This is my first time having one

Yes, it’s stress. She feels threatened by you. It’s best to give them at least a week to settle in.

@nightinggale6470

They need to be separated ASAP. Each should ideally have their own 40 gallon or bigger as adults. They’re drinking when you’re not looking. As for how to know if they’re eating: simply watch them hunt, or tong/hand feed.

@nightinggale6470

Ok. First of all, any heat source must be plugged in to a thermostat to regulate the temperature and prevent it from overheating and burning the gecko. You also need a temperature gun to measure surface temps. Secondly, heat mats aren’t a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.

Is he losing weight? What’s his setup? What’s the hot spot temperature and what are you using to measure it (analog gauge, digital, temperature gun)? And where’d you get him from? Sorry about all the questions but answering them will help determine why he’s not eating. Regarding the issue with his eyes, I’d get him checked out at an exotic vet ASAP.

eee ty so much for doing a video like this I will be getting a leopard gecko soon and I wanted to know what owning a baby one maybe like so I can know beforehand I sadly have to get mine from Petco but ik the people there and they take good care of each and every animal they own plus it is a small store Petco not like a huge PetSmart one
@nightinggale6470
3 жыл бұрын
Please don’t buy animals from petco, they get their animals from mills and are a horrible company to support. There are loads of better options. Avoid chain petstores. Check out reptile expos and Craigslist. Look for reputable local petstores and breeders. Check morph market, just research the breeder before buying. Avoid BHB, underground reptiles, LLL, backwater reptiles, snakes at sunset, and cb reptiles. Aim for smaller hobbyist breeders rather than large scale breeders.
