Now I will give you all some really good news. If you are even an entry-level garage mechanic, you can do 90% of the work on your paint job and a shop. Will love you for it. I know vehicles are really expensive to paint and that’s because the shop has to do all the work. But, if you go ahead and strip all of the paint and do most of the prep work like taping off headlights, etc., and get it to that shop so all they have to do is tape the jams, etc. you will save thousands of dollars. I took my car in and had it painted to a locally owned and operated paint booth.$300 for the entire car. It pays to do the work.

@@ehwrenWhat you are seeing are the binding oils from the compound soaking into the sand texture of the hood. If you are new to polishing even on good paint with scratches it will hide the scratches until you wipe it off. It *has* to be wiped off or no wax / sealant will stick to it. It's just a carrier for the compound. You are probably just as well off rubbing it with steel wool and slapping a glaze or linseed oil on it at this point but that's not a long-term thing and oils run all over the place when it rains. Honestly either strip it and HLVP it with a $1000 setup is the way to go. If the base coat isn't milky I guess you could sand to base and clear over on a personal vehicle but I would just as soon strip to metal and do it properly at that point. Usually on these it's not just clearcoat failure. Source: I detail, I maintain all of my own equipment and that includes my THIRTY YEAR OLD work trucks. Lol Basically the labor hours, it isn't worth it unless you are doing it yourself. I suppose you could use a woolpad like crazy and then use a sealant but at that point you have to remember your paint needs redone eventually. It will look better, but at what cost?

So what happens if he wants you to keep doing what you’re doing you just say no one give them a truck with a shiny spot back. I’m just curious.

I would have clay barred it, then hit it with wet sand with 1000. Remove the faded paint.

It's working, but not up to his standard. Remember, he is professional, the client is looking for his standard and if they don't, they look for somebody else
