It’s about where everything was heading that makes the ending bad. Ruth’s arc was aiming towards redemption, Wendy’s arc was aiming towards madness and recklessness (and death) and marty’s arc aiming towards sacrifice. The byrde family did not suffer any consequences in the end. Everyone else did. I feel like the writers wrote themselves into a risky hole and decided to go the safe way instead of the “breaking bad” way

I will say however, the imagery of Marty surrounded by broken glass in the end was amazing if you caught it. I do think Ruth had to die but not in the way she did. I was hoping Wendy would become a villain but they back-peddled her descent to madness in the last 2 episodes

2 scenes in particular made this ending bad, the scene where Wendy cracks her head on the window. Like why? That never goes anywhere how nutty she's getting. And the scene where Marty beats that dude up in traffic. Those scenes really highlight that the ending they gave was not the direction the show was going previously. Plenty of other things like that too.

Totally agree. Until you highlighted it here, I'd completely forgotten about the road rage fight, but it seemed to underscore a theme of Marty's liberation from fear, which began after he survived his kidnapping to Mexico. Disappointing finale. Mostly. Particularly Ruth. Not specifically because she was killed off, despite my opinion that this was the wrong call, but how it went down. For such a street smart survivor, her getting out and just walking up to that vehicle unarmed was insulting to her character. Just seemed like she did that because the writers wanted her to. Disappointing Wyatt wasn't brought up in that final convo either, considering the themes. (Where does Three hang out in most of the series, by the way? He just seems to teleport in now and then like he lives next door.) The fact not one of the Byrd's suffered Ruth's fate or worse is really disheartening, considering what they've done...but yeah, I mostly mean Wendy. Oh well. I'm off to catch up with the last season of Better Call Saul.

Tragically sad that the final episode casts an unfavourable shadow over the outstanding work that had been done on this series up until the last episode. They debated the fate of Ruth and the very fact that there was consternation about the character’s potential demise should have clued them in that killing Ruth was not going to be acceptable with the people who made the series so popular. So rather than give the fans something they would love, they decided to go for shock.

Idc that a lot of the symbolisms the show introduced were brought up in the last few episodes bc the show went nowhere significant with them. Very thoughtful review that I agree with. Sadly, the ending left me with a more negative view of the show. I feel like watching the entire 4 seasons was a waste. What was a series that I would have given a solid B is now a borderline C-. If Marty is going to be ok with his son killing Mel, why not instead kill Camila, or call the Cops on her? One of the things I really liked at the beginning was how Marty was like a Father figure to Ruth. This worst ending possible frankly ruined the series for me. Thanks again for your review.

My biggest dislike was the wash/rinse/repeat of the Byrdes getting into and out of jams for four straight years. They’re always jabbering about being safe, yet in all that time and with all that money it never occurs to them to have armed security? Drivers? A better house? Over and over they’re held at gunpoint, right up to the end, yet none of them carries a gun? The writers relied on this to move the entire plot along and it just got to be cartoonish. “Everything we do is to protect our family.” Yet, they basically do absolutely nothing to protect their family. Also, I couldn’t stand Ruth. She’s barely smart enough to find her ass with both hands, yet she constantly outwits the Byrdes, the cops, the cartel, the FBI, the mob, etc. just by shooting her mouth off. In anything resembling reality, she’d have been dead within a week.

Imagine if Breaking Bad started with Walt already cooking meth. But not just cooking meth, cooking meth for a big cartel. But not just cooking meth for a big cartel, Skyler is already in on it and cool with what he's doing before the show's even started. And 3 episodes in, Skyler tells Walter Jr. about it. That's what Breaking Bad would be if it followed Ozark's plot. Of course, Ozark can and should be different, but the stakes were so extremely high from the beginning. Marty starts in a position Walt took 4 seasons to reach. So the show has to up the conflict to insane levels by getting the FBI involved, and the Byrdes are playing the FBI and cartel against each other, and they're working out deals between other crime families like the Langmores, and the Snells, and the KC mob who all hate each other, *and* they're courting politicians with backroom deals involving voter fraud, AND they're getting in bed with Big Pharma, *AND* they launder their money through a big, ritzy foundation along with every other business in the Ozarks from casinos to restaurants to strip clubs. Walt had one car wash. Ozark was originally written to be a standalone feature film, and probably would've been much better if it was.

Sure they were fighting for their lives the entire sure but not even their enemies could escape them. You got what you wanted from this show. At the end the byrdes got what they wanted. They were free. But they dug a hole so deep for themselves that being free doesn’t matter. If you don’t like realistic endings, stay away from realistic shows

The runners could have made a statement against the mob by exposing that fact, the kids dying in the accident, ruth killing "oh so allmighty fat fuck face" because emotions made her pick the wrong choices gfoing there alone ,even keeping her lights on, ruth was able to spot at least 3 cars chasing her at this point.. she, asshole mobster mom, should have been under her new house in my opinion. since she allready sacrificed 3 people of hers + her boyfriend her death is blatantly over the top. byrd kids dead by accident so that their wrongdoing brought them nowhere and witness protection would be the only way.

The writers were too focused on their feminist agenda of elevating women as much as possible to the point of it being pretty unrealistic rather than on convincing storytelling. Ruth and the other woman who executed the hostile takeover of the casino seemingly not caring about the inevitable consequences they would suffer from the cartel was the pinnacle of this for me. No person, male or female, would be so nonchalant about this because everyone knows the barbaric, gruesome acts that the cartel commits against its enemies. Couple this with the fact Marty was essentially reduced to pleading and begging Ruth for things, even for helping get his family back, which was no more than the tired feminist fantasy of men being the subservients of women.

When this cartel still killing people from US? Risc of media scandal? Why no one looking for Sherif or this therapist? Why no one think is something wrong if sister did not look for brother who has menthal health issue. He made fight in big public event and no media was interest. Personally I thought that the the car crash would've killed everybody in the family except Marty. Then there would be "5 years later" -cutaway and we move to Mexico where some cartel members are talking some casual shit until they stop, see a man walking towards them and and be like: "Oh, patrón, hey". And then the they slowly show that this "patrón" is actually the man himself - Marty Byrde. In this scenario the only thing he ever wanted was to protect his family and get them out of this crime-world, but in the end he eventually lost everything he cared about and got everything he didn't care about. Now he has nothing and everything at the same time, which I think was said in the show one time. I think that would've been pretty satisfying ending.

The byrds are representative of the American dream and how big family’s that are known for good things have often built there empire on sinister intentions. By Jonah killing the pi who was literally taking about people don’t get to get away with it, it shows the kids are finally on board with the parents. I agree the fourth season felt a little rushed, and I definetely think they could’ve stretched it another season or two without it feeling forced at all. Overall I enjoyed ozark. I don’t really compare it to breaking bad because it’s different enough. If I compared every show that “dark” and follows an antihero then breaking bad and the sopranos and mad men etc would all be compared to each other. Having never seen Breaking Bad, I can’t compare Ozark to it but maybe that’s a good thing? I loved every episode of this show. I only started a couple of weeks ago and found myself watching episode after episode late at night. It truly peaks your interest and keeps you invested, with the stakes increasing each season just when you think they can’t possibly go higher. Personally I didn’t have much of an issue with the ending, other than a couple of things. 1. It felt very rushed, the episodes just before it didn’t feel like the show was wrapping up and only in the last 20 mins of the final episode did I feel like it was ending, which is far too little. 2. Nelson’s death annoyed me. He died for nothing and after all the deaths so far in the show which have been for a reason, have meant something with consequences, Nelson’s death felt like Nelson had been extremely clumsy, and not like the meticulous character he had been in episodes prior. 3. Mel’s death. So you’re a PI investigating a family who you have found out are murderers and working with a Mexican cartel. You discover that the wife KILLED HER OWN BROTHER and so what do you do? Obviously you go late at night on your own to confront them, right? RIGHT? Again, it felt extremely clumsy of the character to confront them like that knowing that they’re murderers, he should’ve known he’d be killed. Anyway, I don’t want to let these things ruin what has otherwise been an incredible journey!
