OOOOOOOHHHHH Those PACKARD Merlins do sing their song !!! FREEEEEEEEEEDOM !!!! Yeah the Mk 16 $hitfire used only the PACKARD built in AMERICA 266 merlin, only spitfire model using that engine and ALL Merlin Mustangs used the PACKARD V1650-3 or-7 merlin !!!

I just missed an opportunity to see a Spitfire flyover by 2 hours which i'll regret forever. I learned they both were fitted with Merlins. Both have such a distinctive sound that you have to wonder if the meanness of the Mustang comes with an aero cost.

Sorry but your heading is wrong as both planes used the PACKARD Built in AMERICA Merlin. The MkXVI (16) spitfire was a Mk IX with the Packard built 266 Merlin and The Mustang used the PACKARD built in AMERICA V1650-7 and yes they were different engines !!! TOO bad the people making these videos do not do the research. there were only 1040 MkXVI spitfires built late 1944 on and the MkXVI was the ONLY spitfire to use a Packard built merlin, Most Packard built merlin went into the MkBIII and MK X Lancaster bombers 3440 of them. plus 1500 Canadian built mosquitos and 1200 Canadian Hurrycanes !! Facts of history !!!

Todays overhauled Merlins are often a mix of Packard and Rolls Royce parts, with some parts as the pistons sometimes newly manufactured. And yes those are interchangable, depending on the variant.

NOPE !!!! There were 4 1/2 times as many Pratt Whitney, Wright and Allison engines made and used in WWII Planes as Merlins !!!! Do the research !!!!

@@wilburfinnigan2142 I'm afraid that you're totally missing the point. No other engine could reach the altitudes of the Merlin with the performance & fuel economy so that the fighters could escort the bombers to Germany, fight the German aircraft and bring them home. Without that ability the war would have been lost. Not only that, the Merlin was fitted to more aircraft at that time than any other engine no matter how many others were produced. It's you that hasn't done your research sonny. Have you learnt anything today about not being so cocky.
It’s definitely a griffon engine, I think the mk 9 was the last Merlin powered variant.
@PaddyPatrone

@@zacsawesomeworld2767 nope, it`s a merlin. Just listen, Griffon sounds very differend, also has much bigger bulges on the engine cowling. From what I`ve read this should be a Packard Merlin.

One really wishes that announcers would just shut up loving their own voices for fifteen minutes and allow the paying spectators to enjoy the aero-mechanical symphonic splendour of these engines.
