The Pönttövuori Tunnel is a railway tunnel on the Jyväskylä-Pieksämäki route in Laukaa, near Lievestuore and the border of Jyväskylä (formerly Jyväskylä rural municipality). There are two tunnels, the older one was completed in 1917 and the newer one in 1995. Only the newer tunnel is currently in use.
The old Pönttövuori Tunnel was originally intended to be bypassed when the Jyväskylä-Pieksämäki railway was being built in 1914. However, due to the difficulty of the terrain, it was decided to build a tunnel instead. At the time, the only tunnel that had been excavated in Finland was the 156-meter Pohjankurun Tunnel on the coastal railway. Due to the complexity of the Pönttövuori Tunnel, heavy machinery was used for the first time in Finland. Construction of the tunnel began in 1914 and it was completed in 1917. It was built by hand at a rate of 30 meters per month and by machine at a rate of almost 60 meters per month. The older tunnel is 1,223 meters long and was the longest tunnel in Finland until 1964 when the 2,734 meter long Kangasvuori Tunnel on the Jyväskylä-Haapajärvi route was completed.
Water flowing into the tunnel was a problem, especially during the winter months. This was solved by covering the entrance of the tunnel with curtains and later with gates at both ends. The tunnel also had watchtowers and signs at both ends. The old tunnel with its railroad tracks has been taken out of service and is also known for its cultural historical significance as the "border of Savonia and Häme". A notable feature of the old tunnel is its straightness: the other end of the tunnel is always visible.
The new tunnel was built because the old tunnel was too low when the Jyväskylä-Pieksämäki railway section was electrified in 1995. It would have been cheaper to expand the old tunnel, but instead a new tunnel that is almost 200 meters longer was built next to it. The new tunnel is 1,421 meters long.
