‘Paap Punyer Bichar’ is not a Baul song, but a conventional philosophical Bengali song about introspection and analysis of the society. Bauls have embraced this song in their performances for its theme and message to the society.
The singer believes that only the Supreme Power is capable of passing an absolute judgement as It is observing everything from outside the system of worldly affairs and illusions. The song reiterates how humans have become the judge of virtues and sins nowadays. But the singer is of the view that the judgement of humankind is not absolute but relative, biassed and highly influenced by being within the system of materialism, vices and attachments. When he tries to protest against this judgement and the judge in the court of the Almighty, he is barred by people from doing so and is subjected to slander. He ponders about how his desire to live with the dignity of a human being is an exception and seeks answers from the society for torturing him into this state. The lyrics depict the isolation and loneliness that he consequently faces, now that he has no one to express his sorrows to, wipe away his tears or find solace in. The singer laments the lack of a ‘home’ and calls himself a nomad who feels that his hopes of having a dignified life and home have been shattered in the stormy struggles of life.

Bauls are a group of wandering mystical minstrels of Bengal. This community started with the largest Cultural Revolution in the history of human civilization, the Bhakti Movement led by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Their syncretic traditions are the outcome of a culmination of Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. Baul Music and Philosophy are deeply intertwined, with the Music serving as a medium for expressing and exploring our inner-self and the world around us, in search of the Divine. They also emphasise the importance of love, compassion, and tolerance, and reject distinctions based on caste, religion, or social status. Duality is a common theme in Baul song lyrics, with allegorical narratives using metaphors. ‘Deho-tatva’ - a recurring premise in Baul lyrics - is a concept of portraying nature and the universe through our bodies, which reflects the immortality of the cycle of life and death. It connects sex and spirituality - spiritual union of the individual with the Divine - to attain Moksha.
