Great video I just got a bike with plastic panniers so this will be helpful. I use the stuff sack method but I also like to put my clothes in a vacuum seal bag that you can buy on Amazon the ones that you don't need a vacuum for so I can vacuum seal my clothes so they're super flat then I can slide them in anywhere you can hold 3 days of clothes per bag. But the stuff sack for everything else for sure. Best and easy idea especially with camping gear.

Great Video. Thanks for sharing! - My clothing is "Ranger Rolled" in "changes" in small vacuum bags in cubes in a 40l box-shaped waterproof roll-top duffle, along with everything else that goes into the tent (shag rug, refrigerator, disco ball, etc). My logic is that packing cubes are squarish, my panniers (soft and hard) are squarish, and my duffle is squarish. Plus, cubes are far less expensive than dry bags and name brand stuff sacks. I do have dry bags. But, I typically just carry them for overflow and just-in-case.

Traveled as a railroad conductor for most part of 40 years, no one wants to change from wet clothes to wet clothes! Cubes come in various sizes and shapes making them my choice. As for water proofing a simple plastic bag does wonders. Wrinkles you can’t get away from them completely, but rolling your clothes makes a huge difference. Another thing is use the water proof bags for your dirty clothes they can and do contaminate clean clothes very fast!

No offense but I have to say your on a different level than I am 😆 I use one large water proof bag for all my clothing strapped onto the bike some where and trash bags to waterproof anything else. Lol that’s pretty much my budget. I guess you can say I keep it simple due to necessity 😂 but hey it’s always nice to see what’s out there. All in all I do appreciate the info and understand how you feel about waiting for riding season. We’re practically neighbors here in New England take care

There is no one right way to do this. If there is something you find useful, use it. Others on this thread are commenting on how I am not organized enough. Read their suggestions and if something makes sense, use that too. Otherwise keep doing what works for you. Ride safe!

I’d have to go with the packing cubes as I can’t be seen in public wearing wrinkled clothing. I have an image to maintain, Craig. 😄 Remember what Fernando would say; “It is better to look good than to feel good.” Good info on this video. Try to stay warm up there!

I use a double sided stuff sack where clean clothes go in one end and, when you pull them out, the divider moves so you can stuff dirty clothes in the other side. Waterproof, separates the clean stuff and the sweaty stuff without needing an extra bag, what's not to love?

I"m sticking with the sacks simply because they DO NOT need to go into the panniers. Those are better used carrying the other camping stuff, like food, bourbon, mosquito spray, pans, a stove, tools, a camp hatchet, beer, bourbon. ohh, I repeat myself. But the dry sakes have never leaked and they tie down nicely though granted, my bike does look a little like a two wheeled- hobo adventure. But, I've never had anything drop off the bike. I use one dry sack for the sleeping bag, the other for clothes, a smaller one for the rain gear or a change of gloves. Stay warm, dream warm of lovely summer rides.

It is true the bags do not have to go in the panniers. I guess it is the boy scout in me to have the extra protection. I have a big 60 liter bag for camping gear, but I still bags inside. Thanks!

You’re not the only one who is antsy. My riding group just met last night to discuss this years ride. We decided on Detroit to Gatlinburg and a few days in the Myrtle Beach area. Then back to Tennessee then back to Michigan over 9 days time. Last year I put a folded t-shirt a pair of socks and a pair of underwear in a gallon sized zip loc bag. Every day I changed them out and put the previous garments in the used bag with the worn shirt folded inside out to show it had been worn and keeping them as flat as possible. I packed them all in my saddlebag liners then packed my jeans separately another liner in my trunk. Seemed to work pretty well all in all.

I can always count on you for useful and interesting information, Craig. Thanks for this! I’m going with the cubes as I don’t want my wife and her fashion police to arrest me for excessive wrinkles. What do you pack your dirty laundry in? Will the compression sacks maintain an odor with sweaty worn base layers in?

Have a third bag, brown in color, dirt clothes goes in there and when need to wash, I just grab the bag and go. I have never had an issue with smell, but can wash the bag as well. The brown bag is canvas.

Both of my zippers broke on my seat bag. But i still have a backpack i have had senss i was 16, and i am 50 now. Some bags last longer than others. And i have only had my motorcycle seat bag two years. My old backpack is not waterproof, but it is sturdy. I just had to learn to pack my cloths in waterproof bags, like trash bags. Its not fun to stop for the night and all your cloths are wet from the rain.

Yes, some bags are made better than others. These stuff sacks come from the backpacking world. There are of course other options as you mention. As long as it keeps you clothes dry. Thanks!

I carry 4 days of baselayers. One I am wearing and three additional sets. I then have a pair of convertable pants, a shirt, two pairs of underwear for off the bike and two pairs of socks. And off bike shoes. Of course my riding gear, which will include midlayers depending on potential weather.

My new bikes saddlebags are weather-proof, but I also use a Saddlemen-style travel bag strapped onto my pillion seat when traveling which isn't weather-proof, although it does have a rain cover. I think I'd prefer the packing cubes to the compression sacks for off-bike clothing. If I get to a location where I might want to have a sit-down dining experience, I don't want to walk in wearing wrinkled clothing, or what we used to refer to in the Military as the "Duffle-bag" look. Is being concerned with appearance petty? Perhaps. But it's my personal choice to NOT look like a Bum. Another thing I definitely do use the compression sacks for though is dirty laundry. Best to keep the funk separate!

No, wanting to look presentable is not petty and either option is good. I am actually thinking about trying the cubes on this upcoming trip. Thanks!

Now why do you need a waterproof bag when your panniers and top trunk are waterproof?
@LivingOffTheSlab

As I mentioned in the video, it is just an extra bit of protection, but the sacks also help to organize and compress.
@HomeBudgetComputing

Not very organized, are you? In a stuff sack, you roll the clothing and you can fit more into the same space. You can also get to things easier that way. In a cube, you roll and you can fit more and get to it easier. You never stuff and cram unless you just don't care. I also have been using zippered bags for years and the zippers haven't worn out at all. Even if they do, replacing a zipper is no big deal. $6-7 per zipper and a few minutes with a sewing machine and you're good as new. Also, if you're using cubes, don't put them in the saddlebags how he did. One on top of the other means it's harder to get to the one on the bottom. Slide them in vertically and you can get to either at any time. You generally make great videos, but this one isn't great. I'm not retired yet, so I don't do the miles you do. I get 10-15k year for road trips. Maybe one day we'll meet up on the road and I can show you how to pack, lol.

Thanks for the great tips. I guess packing is the touring rider's version of an oil thread, everyone has a different way to do it and there is no perfect method. I have a friend who is like you in that everything is in cubes and perfectly placed in his panniers. It works for him, but for me, it is painful to watch him make sure everything is perfect. For me, I want simple and easy. I spend my entire work life worrying about things being complicated and perfect. When I am traveling, I want to let all of that go. My methods work for me and yours work for you. Others should try them both and take what makes sense to them. Ride safe!
