Awesome video! I just recently got into backpacking and my dad gave me an alice pack from his USMC days. I was having the most trouble trying to figure out how to get my tent and sleeping bag attached to that thing, along with all my other gear, and I was about ready to give up!! Then I see this video and it all clicks. You helped raise my spirits and gave me the knowlege needed to hit the trails. Thanks!

I'd recommend using an army issued wet weather bag for added waterproofing to your ruck. Its what we did when I was in the army. We did that with the MOLLE rucks when they came out too. Plus, they float in water when you pack them right. Field strip the MRE's and tape the main meal, heater, spoon and the snacks that go with it.
@peterbidelschwambach7900

Amen. Weather bags make the pack virtually water proof, give it buoyancy, and they're easier to reach when you need to mess with your ruck on the go, just pull them off the pack and there you go.

Many thanks! I just got a medium ALICE & frame yesterday. I've used a few different packs over the years, internal and external frame, but this is my first ALICE. I don't know why the criticisms of your packing technique: it seems consistent with the principles of packing an external frame pack. Your critics' own videos certainly don't give a clue even as to their qualifications to comment.

Excellent demo. I have a Swiss rucksack which gives me enough room for the smaller stuff and the bedroll goes on a shoulder sling. I also carry a belt full of equipment like my knife, shovel and small axe. You can say I am loaded down, but I don't have more than 350 yards uphill to get away. Luckily I am in the back woods of PA already and can return to semi civilized living with a short walk downhill.

I suppose everyone will have their own idea of how to pack a ruck, unless it was issued to you; in which case, you'll pack it the way you're told!!! LOL!!! Back in the day, we called those "baby rucks".......... simply because we never used anything but the large rucks in our units; which are nearly twice the size............which means, unfortunately, you carry twice the weight. LOL!!! When you're doing it, it sucks like nobody's business; but now that we're considered old men, I guess it's a good laugh to reminisce. Either one, which ever you use though, will be a reliable piece of gear. There was nothing high-tech about them; just basic, strong & durable, and lightweight when it was empty. My last eight or so years, the army was pushing hard for a replacement, trying the hi-tech route, and we were forced to use all the crazy ideas from folks that never had to carry it full of gear; but absolutely nothing was worth a damn compared to the ALICE pack, which I could carry over 120 lbs worth of equipment in (when I was young). Couldn't tell ya what the boys are carrying now, or if the stuff is any good, but I do know the stuff is godawful expensive. I retired just before the GWOT started, so I no longer get gear for free. Save a heap of cash and get yourself one of these if you can find them, either the smaller one here, or the large, and make sure you have the frame. I still have my two large ALICE packs I was issued, both are over twenty years old now, and still holding up with no deficiencies. Us old guys can't do much anymore, but our words are still pretty strong. I'm sixty-three, and I haven't found a pack that can do the job for less than 50 bucks yet. Good deal. I was given one of these along with some other military and camping gear. I mainly used it to cart my airsoft stuff around, but might use it for some overnight hikes. I figure if I combine with with my old H-harness and replace the ammo pouches with canteens, I can carry a gallon of water. Good for an overnight anyway. If nothing else, will help build up stamina.

You are 1,000,000% right about how rugged and versatile the A.L.I.C.E. pack is. Those loops for webbing on the bottom are so useful for attaching additional gear, that all packs should adapt a similar system. (some have, not all) But i gotta say (in this video anyway) you aren't taking advantage of the pouch attachments points! That's not only perfect for things like the First Aid Kit, it's on the outside your friends and everyone can see it (if you are found injured or unconscious). i'm guessing you didn't want an asymmetrical feel. Another personal preference of mine is always store spare clothing in waterproof bags, but in case you are caught in a severe storm, fall in a body of water, etc. But it's a great video that showcases just how reliable useful in all seasons that system is. Thumbs up.

Great video! I've got a large pack that I really like but think that a medium would be great for a day of hunting or hiking in the bush. It looks just large enough to pack everything needed to get through the night if someone gets lost, caught up dressing an animal shot before dark, etc or cannot get out for some other reason, but also small enough to avoid the temptation of packing too much for a comfortable excursion.

I've changed out my straps for the newer MOLLE ones for a good deal more comfort and I am a believer in the ALICE cargo shelf, but everyone in my family uses ALICE...we all pack ours similarly and it makes for easy access if I happen to need to locate something in my daughter's pack, for example. I'm building the Hellcat ALICE rucksack. I scored a woodland camo main pack in damn good condition! Even the writing is still visible on the underside of the flap. Its great because most of them are flaky and barely waterproof. The ALICE only weighs 3.5 lbs. while both the MOLLE and ILBE weighs 8 to 10 lbs. empty! Great video btw. I'd recommend either a 2 quart canteen on either of the upper sides of the pack or a camelback bladder. I'd field strip the MRE's and have the main meals with a few snacks banded together.

If you like the standard ALICE pack, you'll love the Hellcat mod. It makes the ALICE pack a lot more comfortable plus you get the additional MOLLE webibing on the waist and shoulder straps. It is my BOB of choice.
@phillyphilhouse79
9 жыл бұрын
Keith Fillinger I'm building it now. Just need the molle shoulders straps and the sleep system carrier. I'll be set after that. I like how I can have canteens on the waist belt. I only have them for spare water and for the canteen cups and canteen stove. Camelbak all the way but I also have the 2 quart. The ALICE is so much lighter than the ILBE that I have. I plan on using this one for a B.O.B., hunting, hiking, etc. The ILBE is for camping out for a few days. I attached my old molle butt pack to the ALICE clip holders above the 3 outer pockets. The 200 or 100 round SAW pouches are good to put on the lower sides for spare gear too. I did that to the ILBE with both the 100 and 200 round pouches. Works great.

+phillyphilhouse79 I you are still looking for the parts, I got my pack and the straps from an online vendor called Tony's Tactical. Everything was in excellent condition, shipping was reasonable, and the items were shipped quickly. I highly recommend his store and the Hellcat pack. Best of luck!
@phillyphilhouse79

Keith Fillinger I'm still debating on whether or not to get rid of the ILBE pack. Think I'll use that for camping and the ALICE for hiking and hunting and a main B.O.B.. I've got a secondary one in my truck just in case but its a smaller bag with 20 pounds of gear in it and an MRE. Going to add 2 more and field strip them down to main meals, the snacks, MRE heaters and 1 spoon each. Tape the separately and put into one MRE meal bag. I have 2 spare camelback bladders still in their wrappers when I was issued them in the army. I've got like 4 or 5 of those things, but 2 are still unused. One is in the smaller B.O.B. and fits perfectly. Scored some emergency water packs. 6 in each bug out bag. But that's like LAST resort since I have a water filter and water purification tablets. I was thinking of adding a canteen kit to the smaller B.O.B.. A MOLLE canteen pouch, canteen, canteen cup with stove and water purification tablets in that. I've got one on the ALICE Hellcat I have now. That way I can boil the water just in case before or after running it thru the water filter. Plus, I have my BioLite stove and pot inside the main ALICE pack.
@phillyphilhouse79

Keith Fillinger The butt pack allows for more easily accessible gear I need so I wont have to dig in the main pack for it. In that I have fire starter kits, fire cubes, small lighter, eye pro, army issued leather work gloves and 550 cord. I always put my wet weather top and bottoms in one of the pouches, the poncho liner aka woobie in another and use the last one for field stripped MREs, water filters, emergency water pouches and bug spray.

About the one thing I like doing different, is putting the sleeping pad across on top behind my head. If I ever take a fall, the pad protects me from falling back and splitting my head open on a rock or something incredibly stupid, which Murphy has proven to me on occasion.. I also use regular green D-ring nylon straps for my sleeping bag. Mainly just because I hate tying those weird knots in para-cord.
