You put a lot into a 10 minute video Steve. The compilation of historic footage, camera shots and score made this a great watch. While I'm tuning in for the kayak updates, your presentation skills set you apart. Keep them coming.

Production values on this one are outstanding - good job! I've been working my way through your videos and really enjoying the relatability of them all, especially the Medway and Thames adventures - I hope this comes across in the right way, but watching you learn from mistakes is really going to help me when I get on the water and hopefully make some of the same journeys.

Thanks for great video one of the few. I did canal stretch in my IK other day in January and really enjoyed it. I always start in west LDN launching from Old oak bridge, The Collective old oak residency. Usually paddled up to Camden. Always wanted to explore more. My curiosity, earlier morning and thermos with hot drink took me further. I made all the way to Victoria park. Couldn’t go foward as it was getting dark, days are so short in winter. With some stopping in Camden market, going through 3 locks together with barge and lunch in Victoria park it took me 6+ hours with return. Will do it again and will go for full day beyond Victoria park. I didn’t see the sign of that long tunnel or did I? paddled through with torch, there was literally no barge traffic.but next time I’ll wait and follow barge although they’re lot slower.

Thanks Kris. You're right about the short days in winter, I wanted to film a lot more when I made this - especially around the zoo and Regent's Park, but I could feel the sun going down quickly and needed to get back to Paddington before dark. I bet the Regents Canal will be great in the summer

Your videos have convinced me to get this kayak. I have ambitions of growing into something more sea-worthy and doing large-scale expeditions like the English Channel and the Irish Sea crossings. But this is a great place to start certainly! Doing the Ashby canal is probably going to be where I'll start, about 22 miles of lock free rural paddling! Cheers for the informative videos

@@StevieWyatt You should check it out, great paddling scenes. The Lancaster is 41 miles of lock free water too, but that's for another time for me. On a side note I'd love to see a video of your filming set up, how you record from the x500, with a rigid I'm guessing suction cups on the kayak but how do you keep a camera still on the x500? I love the frame with the bow in shot and would like to record/take pictures from a similar angle.

@@TheAnglan It seems Stevie fixed it to his backpack in front of the cockpit... check at 1:25. I'm researching some headgear, I'd like to record some PoV videos in the future. I was also thinking of a chest mount for a moment but realized that with a correct fast paddling technique, the camera would be just going left-right-left-right all the time (due to torso rotation).

Really nice video Steve, love your work. A couple of questions. At 4:48 did you really leave your camera on the towpath to film yoursef paddling by? Your faith in the honesty of your fellow man is an inspiration. Secondly I have been looking at other vids of people paddling the london waterways and a lot of them seem to be choked with green weed on the water surface - but not here. Is this a winter/summer thing?
@StevieWyatt
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! For the wide shots (and also the timelapses) I used an Insta 360 GO 2. This is a tiny camera that has a magnet on it, so I can stick it to a lamp post (or an unsuspecting narrowboat!) and literally nobody notices it's there. So it's great for solo filming where you still want to get wide shots. As for the weed, yeah London's canals aren't fast flowing water like a river so weeds and algae can develop in warm conditions. You see CRT dredging boats on the canals in the summer, kind of like underwater lawnmowers. They help but it's difficult to manage. It generally shouldn't affect your paddling though, and anything harmful to your health will be well signposted. Local knowledge is best, so chat to other waterway users.

Great video. Two years ago I've also bought an x500, but I've only been using it in the summer. Afraid of the cold water. What kind of clothing/wetsuit do you use on these winter trips?
@StevieWyatt
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sam! I wear a technical base layer, then neoprene long john type wetsuit, then fleece layer on top of that (a merino wool jumper in this case). On top I wear a wind/ waterproof jacket/ cag. It works well in the cold, and the paddling keeps me warm. I usually end up taking the jumper off after an hour. The only problem was my feet got really cold in this video. I'm wearing merino socks and neoprene boots. Someone suggested heated socks so I might give that a try, or hand warmers in the boots. The idea behind this set up is not dressing for the cold air, but dressing for the water in case I fall in. Hence the neoprene.
