Deflate the BCD to ascend? After the dive, the video narrates "close the valve" and then shows the valve being closed, opened, and closed again. I'm totally new to this so don't put any faith in my questions. Just seems odd.

Hi Mike, Yes your deflate your BCD to Descent, but also to Ascend. I know this sounds a bit weird. But the reason for deflating the BCD while ascending is that we always need to ascend slowly (slower then 18m a minute). Inflating your BCD will make you ascend to fast risking Decompression Sickness. Even if you don't inflate, but have some air left in your BCD, this can then expand as a result of a pressure decrease on the way up. This expanding air can now lead to ascending too fast. This is why we deflate on the ascend. We just swim up with our legs. This is very easy and it controls the speed of the ascend much better.
