Page Ngwenya is a poet from Durban, South Africa. At the age of 21, he has acquired a BSc Marine Biology degree at UKZN Westville Campus and is already a seasoned entertainer having performed at Jomba!, Word N Sound Live Music & Poetry On Tour, Give Me Ten Mics, Cup O’ Thought, Poetry Africa Festival and many others.
Page was chosen as one third of the Poetry Africa Slam Jam team against the European team from the Ordsprak Festival (Sweden) at the 16th Poetry Africa Festival in 2012 and in 2013 was a prelude poet for the 17th Poetry Africa Festival. A regular in slam, Page was crowned Cup O’ Thought Slam Poet of the Year in 2012 and represented KZN in the first national slam championship held at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. On World Poetry Day 2014, he was put on a list of nine young South African poets to look out for by Word N Sound, where he was one of the youngest poets and the only one not based in Gauteng.
He describes his poetry as, himself; in the way in which it reflects his humour and ability to turn tragedy into triumph. “Poetry is not only in the words, but in the world. It is in the land, in the air and mostly, in ourselves.”
