Usually, for sad or moving scenes in some anime (Mugen Train, Kimi no Na wa, Violet Evergarden, for example), I just tear up and blow my nose a lot, but for this one, I inadvertently cried out, “Noooooo!” in the scene a certain someone got hit by car-kun, and tears ran down my cheeks. As I mentioned in my other comment, I had to remind myself that these were 2 dimensional fictional characters so that I could control myself, lol.

Here's explanation for Shoko. She's not selfish, all she wants is to save Sakuta. In the hospital, she told Sakuta he will have traffic accident when having date with Mai. So she told him to watch illumination with her(where the accident occurs). In order to make Sakuta change the venue of dating with Mai. Then, even if Sakuta wants to sacrifice himself, he wouldn't be able to. Final scene, Shoko is alive because they went back to the past, Mai shot a movie which encourages more people to become a doner. The movie has so much happening. It's complicated to catch all information in first time watching.

Yeah. Sakuta was really working on a messiah complex (which is reasonable after personally saving four girls so far), and he really needed some perspective on self-sacrifice means to those who love the person who dies. I also like how Mai was more responsible for saving Shoko's life in the end than Sakuta was.

Rewatching the scene with your reaction to it almost made me get that same feeling again lol. Fun Fact: The future shoko that shown up(after Mai died) is implied to have married Sakuta on the timeline that Mai died. Not sure why the anime removed the wedding ring from her hands during the clinic scene. Volume 7 excerpt: The tears on her fingers glistened in the moonlight. The silver ring gleamed on her left ring finger. “One last thing,” Sakuta said, despite himself. “Yes?” “When you get back to the future, deliver a message to future me.” “……” “Tell him, ‘Make your adorable bride the happiest person in the world.’” “……!” For a moment, Shouko was caught off guard. That told him everything. He’d figured as much, but now he was sure. He wasn’t talking to Shouko Makinohara. He was talking to Shouko Azusagawa. “……I’ll make sure he hears that,” Shouko said, smiling softly through her tears. They were dripping off her cheeks, and she was no longer trying to wipe them away. This time they were tears of joy.

So the girlfriend he loves so so much who dies by saving his life and he proceeds to just marry Shoko? That's fucked up. I really try to like Sakuta but I always have the feeling he actually doesn't value Mai that much looking at his actions compared to how much Mai values him and this proves my point even more.
@Treboris1

@@julesvr5205 I agree that Sakuta does not value Mai as much as she does value him. The ginormous character flaw he has is the Hero/Savior Complex. It is personality flaw people have where they live to help, serve people to make and keep them happy while completely ignoring his own self. So, in the timeline where Mai dies and Shoko lives, he is broken inside knowing he is alive while his beloved died in his place. He has little reason to live and is probably stuck depressed at home. Little Shoko would have Mai's heart and feel guilty as well for this fact. She would visit Sakuta to bring him out of rock bottom. Remember, Shoko is still I love with Sakuta at this point, but would not take advantage of that. With Sakuta's Hero Complex, he would see Shoko's efforts and know she still loves him. His stupid guy brain would conclude "She loves me. I can at least make her happy. What else is my useless existence for?". They get married, but he never gets over her Mai's death and trying to hide it from Shoko, Shoko can still see this. And then she travels back in time to help Sakuta go back in time to save Mai. And last detail, in the nurses office after seeing the wedding ring, he came to the conclusion that future him is a dummy (for above reasons) and tells Shoko to tell her husband in her future to take care of his adorable wife. I hope after all these events, he gets over the Hero Complex. It's known to destroy relationships as well. And that's the end of me rambling

@@julesvr5205 Did you like miss the part of the movie where Sakuta was completely distraught over Mai's death? The whole point of that scene was to show how important she was to him. By that logic, anyone who marries/remarries YEARS after their partner dies didn't actually love their original partner...

For fans of this show I would recommend two movies. 1: A Silent Voice, nothing supernatural but an excellent film. It has superb layered inner meanings that are simply extra bits of awesome if you catch them, but do not detract from the film at all if you miss them. My favorite anime movie of all time, superb ending. 2: Your Name. Has some supernatural elements and a great "Freaky Friday" type trope with some unique elements and big twists. Some of the most gorgeous animations I have ever seen, and a relatively easy going film compared to the Bunny Girl and Silent Voice films.

During the latest movie, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid, they have Shoko in a conversation with Sakuta where she basically explains the end of the Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl movie. I guess the writers of the anime series (TV and movies) figured out how confusing the conclusion of the movie was to the audience. To be fair, it was pretty well explained in the novel though.

Brooo Shoko literally went back and saved Mai and Sakuta and then erased their memories of her so they don’t have to bear the burden of knowing they can’t do anything to save her. How can you not stand her? Also she says that she must have failed, she knows she messed up and it didn’t go the way she wanted to. She has flaws like everyone else and she was using other ways to hint towards not going to that place where the accident happened but after the hospital thing and his “adolescence syndrome” re-awakening itself it caused a speedbump in the road and she sped through it without slowing down.

In the novel, Shoko, who has Mai's heart, will marry Sakuta in the future. This is why Shoko in the health room cried. She is definitely a girl who deserves happiness. I suggest you read the manga, which is about Shoko's perspective. There are also six or seven volumes of the novel. This is absolutely It is one of the good works worth watching

It’s pretty funny that Kaede told Shoko’s younger self the three phrases that she told him before. A little bootstrap paradox. If Shoko told Kaede those words on the beach because he told her those words when she was younger, who initially spoke those words? It’s an infinite loop with no observable origin. Also, Mai saving Sakuta’s life is why she will always be best girl
