People who don’t know how watercolors work won’t be able to replicate this because they may not know how much water to use, how much pigment, how hard or light do you pain with the brush, how long does it take to dry without messing it up, etc. The title was misleading. Remember: the key to getting better at watercolor is *understanding* watercolor. You can be a master in some mediums, but that doesn't necessarily translate to mastery in all mediums. Watercolor is partially transparent, lifts easily, and get streaky if you don't put fill the entire shape at once. With watercolors, you need to be loose, don't worry about perfection because the imperfection is what makes a watercolor painting a watercolor painting! Just get the broad shape right, you can add in more detail later. And always, always, always, let your paint dry all the way before adding another layer.

In terms of fun abstract watercolor, might I suggest boxes? You pick 2-3 colors and fill as much of a page as you like with boxes, making a gradient as it goes. It's good just for getting a feel for color mixing and improving brush control. Make them different sizes, kinda like the lantern festival in tangled. I'm very precious with my approach to art, so i get more satisfaction from making them not overlap, but that's an option!

Use good cotton watercolor paper. Use both sides and every square centimeter so as not to be wasteful when learning/practicing. Use whatever watercolor you have or can afford. Even Royal and Langnickel in tubes will look good if you start with a good cotton watercolor paper. If you already have wood pulp wc paper you can make it work better by soaking it in a pan of water for a few minutes, dabbling with a dry cloth and taping it to a board. You won’t be able to scrub out as much but it will improve vibrancy and make the colors bloom better.

I like knowing these water colors exist. So that’s the positive take on this instructional video.

I see many comments that say painting these won’t help you, but it helps gain confidence and get used to drawing with a new kind of media

A year ago when I first got water colors, I was so bad I almost gave up, now it just comes naturally to, when I get stuck, or I want to paint something new like brick walls or mountains, I can look up videos that actually help. Don't give up just yet. It's possible.

i feel like this practice painting would be better suited for acrylic since it needs bold colors to layer over one another. you aren’t using water color to its full capability by just globing paint on

Hmm yes, Abstract art to fill in the sketch of a character I already premade, definitely helpful.
