On 30 July 2022 we were very excited to see a flock of Painted Button-quails in the distance near our creek, in a big area of leaf litter, under large old trees. Painted Button-quails are part of the threatened Temperate Woodland Bird Community and they often feed in grasses and leaf litter on the ground. They scratch and glean, spinning on alternate legs to create distinctive circular depressions, known as platelets. In Victoria only the Painted Button-quails make these platelets, and the platelets are often the only visible sign that the bird is present. These birds do not need to drink at our ponds as they eat wet food. Our only pictures were when they happened to wander close to a pond or bad phone photos.
Before the sighting in July 2022, we had only ever seen one Painted Button-quail, 9 years earlier, in September 2013.
Sightings of Painted Button-quails since July 2022 became more common so we purchased some new movement sensing cameras and resurrected many old cameras and put them in leaf litter areas around the property where we had seen platelets. By August 2023 we had 11 cameras in 4 different parts of the property and we realised that if we raked the leaf litter in front of the cameras we would know if the Painted Buttonquails had been there because there would be fresh platelets.
These videos are all from one of the new cameras on the creek line. All these visits are from 21st August 2023 to the 11th September 2023.
