In this video, I explain how I painted a wild field of mustard flowers in Ojai, California!
I edit this video to show the main blocking in of the canvas. It is 11" x 14".. Once that is done, I will stand back and make adjustments. The block in took about an hour. The adjustments at least as long. On another occasion I'll show the adjustment process.
During adjustments I modify edges that catch too much attention. It is also the famously treacherous path to overworking.
I am a BIG believer in understanding what you are going to paint before you start. So many things can happen that you don't anticipate when you begin right away. Therefore, having a good grasp of the structure BEFORE you begin is fundamental.
In the first video, I show my thinking on the structure of the image and I draw my image first to clarify where everything sits in space. That allows me to put it down cleanly and simply as I paint.
