*Keep in mind that I'm not going for "perfect" and i'm not necessarily trying to restore this truck. I was actually going to leave the frame and exhaust how it was, but wanted to do a little something to it. I'm sure you can go MUCH deeper if you wanted to (pressure washing, sand blasting, other things to treat it, etc...) Thanks for all of the suggestions and help guys! Even if it's telling me what I did wrong, lol. I've still got A LOT to learn and I'll be making plenty of mistakes along the way*

Perfectly fine to back it out and WASH THE FRAME WITH SOAP AND WATER, to get the loose dirt off. Then bring it back inside and let it dry for a few days. Then proceed with your plans.

Looks great. For the future, you might want to use a rust converter paint on something like the bed, where you were able to get the majority, but there’s obviously going to be some left behind. Doesn’t cost much more, and you can leave it there or paint over it for your final look. Don’t worry about the trolls, trolls happen. Keep on moving forward!

Looks pretty good. A couple tips for next time. It's not enough to just blow something off with air to clean it before paint. You want to use something to remove any wax/grease/dirt that may be on the surface. If you don't do that there's a good chance you'll end up with peeling paint down the road. I don't know how long that VHT paint is going to last. it doesn't like to be sprayed on dirty rusty metal. And it also requires a pretty specific process to fully cure it. It needs to be baked to cure. So read the directions on the can or look it up on the internet to get the directions. It requires running the vehicle for a certain period of time, letting it cool and then progressively running it for longer periods then letting it cool in between. And before you put the bed back on crawl under the bed clean up all the areas where the bed sits on/bolts down to the frame. Then give them a few coats of paint. Otherwise the bed will rust in those areas. Then when you are re-installing the bed put some anti-seize on all the bed mounting bolts before installing them. Yes it's a nightmare of a mess to work with. I suggest wearing some rubber or latex gloves while doing it. Otherwise you will end up looking like the tin man. It gets all over everything. But it works! It will keep the bolts from rusting and making it impossible to remove the bolts/bed in the future. I use it on just about any chassis hardware ( like the shock mounting bolts/studs ) . It makes life a whole lot nicer in the future. I live in Minnesota so I know about rust. I also put some on all the wheel studs before putting tires on. Just don't get it on brake rotors where the pads contact them. If you do spray them with brake clean to remove it.
@dannyhernandez305

Yeah, this video little old but im sure other comments may have mentioned. after sanding down, wash it with soap nd water, dry out. then maybe use a phosphoric acid prep, rust converter, then a top coat. just refreshing my knowledge cuz im bout to do some work on my suv. I think products i got in mind were, the sand down wash/dry prep on any frame or parts. Rust converter product, aka rust bullet, then i would use a top coat paint on top of it to seal it in. then i could additionally add a undercoat product such as PB Surface Shield, fluid film..etc and that would be the perfecto restoration/rust proofing combination imo

Use a putty knife to scrape, unless it is a useless screwdriver and you don't use it for removing screws ever again. When you paint on the stang I suggest you use a good rust converter primer first. It basically kills the rust that was left instead of just covering it up and possibly having the paint flake of in just a couple of years or so. For just a few bucks more it could last much longer. Keep up the great work, your doing great with the ol'e F150 and I am glad you was able to get it up and running so easily.

Confession: I subscribed at the first installment because I thought “dude has no idea what he’s getting himself into”. But I realize you’re using the F150 (which looks like a great first project) as a platform for you to find out all that you didn’t know, and that’s a very wise move. The Mustang is going to take abundant skill (and money), and will be sometimes frustrating. But by going down this F150-first path,I think you have a much better chance to succeed. Stay with it. There will be bad days, but good days too.

A portable sand blaster would've worked better at removing that rust. Easier too. Looks good overall. Not sure I would've painted the exhaust though. Since it doesn't just rust from the outside. Condensation from normal combustion gathers inside and allows it to rust from the inside out as well.
