Crank up the Sound ! Painting a Santa Cruz Deck with Hi Flow Acrylic paints.
My first attempt at painting a skateboard deck. I couldn't find any helpful resources on line so decided to document the process for others looking to tackle a My Colorway deck.
Mistakes were certainly made so here is what I learnt:
The main paint medium used was Hi Flow "transparent" acrylic by Golden. (designed to be used with airbrushes). I chose this because I wanted a vibrant colour that did not cover the black design screen print. Posca pens have a thick paint application and they would cover up most of the detailed reaper background. The Hi Flow acrylics worked perfectly, however I had to apply 4 to 6 coats to get a rich colour. After the first 2 coats of the main blue graphic bottom, I realised that using a brush to apply was going to result in a very patchy finish, so I decided to mask all areas so I could apply longer more confident brush strokes for coats 3 and 4. This worked very well but I wish I has used masking from the start as the tail is a little patchy. The painting of the red Reaper was masked from the start and it turned out perfectly.
After 4 to 6 coats of the acrylic, black details do need to be brought back to a full black using black posca pens.
I masked off the board edge because I wanted to retain a reference to the original raw white finish of My Colourway. The standard masking tape worked ok, but I later changed to a Vinyl masking tape by Tamiya that worked much better.
The airbrushing of the top side took a VERY long time because I only had a small airbrush. Next time I will use a larger airbrush so I do not have to apply 20+ coats to this large area.
