It's also a good idea to wash the miniatures in dish soapy warm water to get the mold release chemicals off the miniatures and rinse before cleaning mold lines and priming.

This certainly doesn't hurt, and I considered suggesting it in my video, but honestly I have NEVER done this in all my years of painting and I never had an issue (knock on wood). I thought it would be disingenuous to ask folks to do something I don't do myself.

@@boardwithpaint All good! I've been painting miniatures since 1988 and didn't start washing the miniatures before priming until the past few years as a recommended tip from some other artists.

Noticed you used an air brush to prime. What about a spray, eg Citadel Colour Chaos Black?

Sure, you can do the same thing with a rattle can primer. I just prefer the airbrush so I don't need to take things outside to prime them. If you want to do the zenithal (dark with white highlights), you can use something like Chaos Black to prime, then do an all over drybrush of white to pick out those highlights.

@@boardwithpaint I have an airbrush but never used it yet, so was a bit reluctant. Been trying to find out which primers are best, white, black or grey and there doesn't seem to be one answer!

I'm assuming you mean money and not time. It's really hard to say. If you're a brand new painter and you don't have any equipment, then your biggest expense will be the paint itself. Here is pretty much all you would need to get started: - Vallejo Medieval Paint Set amzn.to/3Bx898a - Sable Hair Brush Set amzn.to/3BaMX6v - Krylon Spray Primer amzn.to/3qyuSdC All of the above will cost less than $60 US. Hope that helps!

what is the airbrush you use?

It's just a cheap one with a small compressor I got at my local gaming store. This is the closest thing I could find on Amazon: amzn.to/3tb2UpN It's perfectly fine for my usage, which is about 90% priming and 10% base-coating larger models.

After priming I cannot paint them the paint just pools... It's driving me crazy as it is totally primed

I'd like to help, if possible. What kind of primer and paint did you use? Did you maybe overly thin the paint? Also, paint can be susceptible to humidity and temperature - is the area you paint in overly humid or warm/cold?

@@boardwithpaint thanks for the reply. Citadel black corax spray. I thought it was the water at first so I stopped thinning it at all, didn't help. I have noticed that my naggaroth purple seems to spread okay, so it makes me wonder if it is the paints gone bad. Yes, I live in a very hot & humid part of the world (Darwin Australia)

Just throwing a few more ideas out there: 1. Was the primer fully dry before you started painting? 2. What color was pooling up - not all colors are equal and some paints are notoriously bad. 3. If you've tried without any thinning then my best guess is that maybe the paint itself went bad, as you suggested. Did you shake/stir the paint really vigorously before painting? Try taking a brush handle and stirring around the bottom of the paint pot - if you get a bunch of gummy or dry chunks then I'd say you need different paint - if the medium separates from the pigment it might pool up some like you've been seeing. Are you using all Citadel colors?

@@boardwithpaint thanks. 1. Yes for weeks. 2. White scar, flayed one flesh, wild rider red are all pretty bad. Red in particular has barely been used. 3. Sure I'll give it a try. That said I just painted a spare resin model and it worked fine. So I think it's something to do with the hero quest plastic... Despite it being primed??? Edit - I didn't clean them... I tried doing two with a sponge and it don't make a difference...

Once the primer is on, the plastic no longer has an effect on the paint, so I don't think it could be the plastic (and I had no trouble painting these same minis myself). White Scar, Wild Rider Red, and Flayed one flesh are all "layer" paints, so they (by design) have a thinner consistency than "base" paints in the Citadel line, so they would be more prone to pooling. I really think it's coming down to one of two problems: 1. Too much paint on your brush. Try wicking some paint off on a napkin before applying it to the model and see if that gives you more control. 2. Paint is not mixed enough (or has gone bad). If it's been sitting a while, then actually stirring it thorougly with a brush handle will probably help. Don't stop till the entire paint pot has the same consistency. And like I said before, if you stir it and there are just solid chunks all over the place, it's time to just toss it out. That being said, I have many pots of Citadel paints that are many years old and they still are just fine.
