The 'space wolf grey' looks very good for horses. Your armies are very well painted by the way and I enjoy the relaxed way you present your videos so I am glad I stumbled on your channel.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I'm not a huge fan of painting horses, and this helps so much :)

Useful video thanks Alec. I like the stuff on the wall behind you (medals, photos etc). Regards Lexi.

Thanks Lexi. They are my dad's medals and photos of him in the Para's. I have my grandfathers medals too, just out of shot. He was a regular when WW1 broke but got wounded early on in the retreat from Mons.

Thank you for this video! I was looking exactly for how to paint horses using contrasts, I don't want all my upcoming Attilan Rough Riders having horses that all look the same after all.

A nice vision of the horse's varieties, Alec! could you show us one of your play games and which rulebooks choose?

I have various vids on my channel covering various rule sets. I mainly play skirmish games these days, like Muskets and Tomahawks, Lion Rampant, Saga, etc.

These look really nice. I’m just thinking of all the other possibilities that mixing would open up. What is your favorite contrast color for the horses out of the bunch?
@wargameshobby

I think the closest to a horse colour are Cygor Brown, Black Templar and Gore-grunta Fur (closest to chestnut), but I also like Skeleton Horde or Aggaros Dunes, for a lighter colour and Basilicanum grey works quite well. I suppose if I had to choose just one colour it would have to be Cygor Brown as that is what I use mostly as it is closest to a horsey colour. 😀

Interesting. Your samples look a bit ‘blotchier’ compared to how a traditional paint would look, yet on your fully painted unit, they look great. Is that the wash that is making the difference?

I think the wash helps, yes. Sometimes I go over them with a thinner coat of paint again if they seem patchy, but with leg and head white patches plus leather reins etc it hardly notices. Also, when you look at horses they often have shadows and light areas depending on the light. But you are correct, the finished figure looks better. 😀
