You are not alone - lots of artists struggle with how social media effects their work. I thought your take on it was the most open and insightful I’ve heard. It’s a hard thing to admit, so thank you for feeling like you can share it with us.

*Sofia* Love the paintings, your sense of colour and style is awesome. Please don't change what you do, or how you do it. People like to see art that is reflective of the person who painted it, not some "painted for money art", because that's what the artist thinks that is what's wanted. When you paint for pleasure, you paint what YOU want to paint, and a lot of love, energy, time, heart and soul will also go into that painting. When you paint for profit, you paint what you THINK will be liked so it will sell, but often it isn't liked as much, because while energy and time have gone into it, the love, heart and soul is missing. When cooking you put all the ingredients in to a dish and it tastes wondersful, but if you miss things out, it may look the same, but certainly won't taste the same. Do what you love, what you want to paint, and people will like it because they can see the heart and soul that went into it, and it will sell.

1000% yes to your thoughts on the pressure to make popular content vs where your creative drive takes you! I really love this video, thank you!

Congrats on getting such realistic and pleasing colours from HIMI gouache…the multitude (landslide?) of garish and shockingly unrealistic paintings out there really turns me off from using gouache. Please do more like this!

Another excellent video. Your painting is on another level, but also , the commentary is so relatable and full of great insight and it really fascinates me to hear how other artists think and create. Thank you so much for sharing your work!

Thanks for bringing up that topic - it's a big reason I stopped going on Instagram. It started affecting what I create and post, and bringing up that need to be in the popular section, making me forget about why I'm creating anything at all. It's been nice to just do things to myself, though I do wish I could connect with other creatives more and easier :) Love these movie scenes! Especially the top one, it's not easy to replicate night colours while keeping them bright and colourful for that holiday vibe. You totally nailed it!

Just discovered you and not sure why it's taken this long tbh! I guess cos you work in gouache and I predominantly work in watercolour, who knows - there's that pesky algorithm working for good this time! Anyway, your art is bloody awesome and you are a breath of fresh air with your commentary on honest issues. Also, your voice is super calming, I need more of that in my life 😊 Cheers from Australia x

I remember someone posting an Instagram story explaining why he was away for a couple of days. And another person saying how touched they are for reaching 200 followers. And I realised it doesn't matter if it's 200, 2000, 20,000... It's chasing the same carrot. I get doing it if you want to market your work (and even then, it's not necessarily effective or worth it), but for people who just want to enjoy it as a hobby, it can be uplifting but the downsides are too many for me atm.

i hear you! Social media can have it's huge downsides, I think there are pros and cons to it. I recognize it has given me a lot in my personal journey in reconnecting with art, but it also has affected me in negative ways. I think mindset is everything when it comes to it! But totally agree with following your heart and what is best for you in the moment when it comes to whether you want to use it or not!

Love your videos! I was surprised, for this one, that you used HIMI gouache when I heard in other videos that you like Holbein best. I heard HIMI id hard to control but it doesn t seem to affect your art at all! You inspire me to paint movie scene as well. Is there a website you would recommend to have decent screenshots from movies? Keep it up, your work is great!

Thank you, Julia! I like Himi gouache for the ease of it as it's all out on the palette when you open the box ☺️ For the first movie I actually just took photos of my screen with my phone, so it wasn't the best quality, for the second I believe I found the screenshot by googling. Pinterest tends to have some good screenshots!

I got sucked into the Instagram likes/followers treadmill and at some point at around 5,000 followers decided to quit. It felt like it was taking over my mind - when did I post last, what will I post next, how will I photograph it, how many people will like it, why or why not people liked or didn't like it... It was so unhealthy. Also the scrolling, liking, following, commenting, and comparing myself to a sea of other artists. I only recently got back to sketching and I love what I've been making and I think, maybe I should put it on Instagram? I won't, because I think it'll make me feel the same way as it did in the past.
