Nice vid Deno. If you want a deep rich tin tone, Vallejo Game Colour Tinny Tin is a great base colour.

Your technics are stunning. But for sake of common sense, Rusty armor could be seen on orcs or undead…No self respected knight would let his wildly expensive armor and subject of pride and honor degrade to such miserable condition. ;)

I am not sure of all of the background details of the Penitent but I don't think he is a Knight, I feel like he is more of a tortured soul and I thought rusty and worn armour would work better for him!

Really cool metal! One question here as well: if you seal with Tamiya Matt afterwards, isn't the gloss effect lost? And therefore the contrast?
@bigdenopaints

Yes, you lose a bit of the metallic effect. However, I do my last layers of shiny metallic paints over the top so it still looks shiny!

I am painting my Oathsworn miniatures along your videos and, although the outcome is not as striking as yours and as I would like , I have learned tremendously in the process. Thanks so much for this series. This one, the penitent, will be my fifth one. I will be using different paints and colors, but I will try to go through the same stages. I never thought metal could be painted this way.

is the overlay color a light rust? or just any lighter red?

I just used reddish colour, rust or otherwise would work fine!

Hey mate, thanks for the great comment. I think we sometimes get too focused on painting to achieve a result, instead of painting for fun! I try to always make sure when I am painting I am enjoying it and not getting fixated on little mistakes. Thanks for watching!

I see you add a matte varnish through the process for effect. But what do you use you protect the mini's from damage while gaming? Do you give them an overall varnish? If so, how do you treat the fact that the mini is full of a variety of matte/satin/gloss finishes?
@bigdenopaints

Hi mate, thanks for the comment. I use the Tamiya Flat Clear as a protective coat on all my models, but I will paint metallic colours over the top of this so they don't lose their shine. The variety of finishes are all harmonised by that spray but you can always readd layers after the varnish. I've not had any trouble with paint rubbing off as a result.

Unfortunately I won't be painting any bosses on film. I was given a unique opportunity to paint the Oathsworn models in advance and I would hate for someone stumbling across my videos to have any part of their experience tarnished.

@@bigdenopaints sorry that's not what I meant. I mean while playing the campaign, how do you manage to paint the bosses with slight or no spoilers. I think this is only possible if you end with the story and come back to the encounter when painting is done
