“Pakhi Radha Krishner Naam Bolona” implores a bird, metaphor for our soul, to chant the names of Radha and Krishna, emphasising the power and significance of these divine names. The song draws a parallel between a bird’s confinement in a cage and the soul’s captivity in the mortal human body. The lyrics suggest that chanting the holy names of Radha and Krishna can help to break the barrier of this mortal realm and free the soul from the cycle of birth and rebirth, thus attaining spiritual liberation or Moksha. The songwriter expresses his sorrow over humans, who, unlike the wise sages, do not chant or listen to these sacred names, leading to the inability of mortal minds to connect at a spiritual and soulful level. The verses claim that even in the womb, these names were uttered by the soul and hence question its human existence on this earth, for not chanting those names even subconsciously, intuitively, instinctively or by mistake. The song reflects on the need for humans to recognise the importance of practising spirituality in their lives in order to transcend worldly limitations and realise our soul’s true essence.

Bauls are a group of wandering mystical minstrels of Bengal. This community started with the largest Cultural Revolution in the history of human civilization, the Bhakti Movement led by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Their syncretic traditions are the outcome of a culmination of Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. Baul Music and Philosophy are deeply intertwined, with the Music serving as a medium for expressing and exploring our inner-self and the world around us, in search of the Divine. They also emphasise the importance of love, compassion, and tolerance, and reject distinctions based on caste, religion, or social status. Duality is a common theme in Baul song lyrics, with allegorical narratives using metaphors. ‘Deho-tatva’ - a recurring premise in Baul lyrics - is a concept of portraying nature and the universe through our bodies, which reflects the immortality of the cycle of life and death. It connects sex and spirituality - spiritual union of the individual with the Divine - to attain Moksha.
