Wind power projects in Pakistan started in 2006 and started generating electricity in 2012 and in 15 years from 2006 till now only 1248 MW has been generated but now it will not happen. One of the major reasons is wind corridor in Sindh and Balochistan. The most important one is jhimpir wind power plant, Pakistan's meteorological department says windmills in the 180-mile coastal strip of Sindh have the potential to generate 11,000 megawatts of electricity. Wind farms spread over an area of about 275 hectares are generating 50 megawatts of electricity but the 180 miles long coastline of Sindh has the capacity to generate 11,000 megawatts of electricity from windmills. The first wind power project was started with a few turbines and then in 2012 its capacity was increased to 56 MW.
At present, Pakistan's power generation capacity is 23,000 MW, while power shortage is 5,000 MW during peak demand. However, with the continuous increase in population, the demand for electricity is also increasing. Under the Pakistan China Economic Corridor project, 17,000 MW more electricity is expected to be added to the national grid in the next few years and work has started on 13 projects. In the past, 30 companies had agreed to install wind power plants here for 130 million and each of them had the capacity to generate 30% of electricity. The nation started getting electricity at the rate of Rs 21 but later agreement changed and now production capacity of a power plant is 37% so the nation is getting electricity at the rate of Rs. 6 per unit.
