Men of the Tolai tribe of the Gazelle Peninsula of East new Britain Province, Papua new guinea, use these buildings to enact magical incantations in secret places in the bush. The incantations would relate to calling of women, possibly death of a person or even composition of some kind of music. Everyone of these would be guided by some kind of benevolent evil spirit.
Due to it's secrecy in nature, I am unable to film these rituals.
The modern day use of these houses usually relate to opening of buildings, death ceremonies and Tubuan Dance Festivals or Matamatam.
With the advent of Christianity, some of these festivals cut across to a ritual prior to a Church Service. I was lucky to have witnessed this occasion at the Consecration of a new Pastor at the Sikut Matupit United Church and at the Opening of the Vunaulul United Church. Both Events were held in January 2012.
Special Thanks to the Folks at Sikut for inviting my family to attend this service. And yes it was beautiful.
Thank you to George Telek for the background music and Deli Lop and ToKal for agreeing to be interviewed.
