The Palawan stinking badger (Latin: Mydaus marchei) is a species of mammal from the skunk family found in the western Philippines. It is named because of its resemblance to a badger, a strong unpleasant smell, and the largest of the islands on which it lives - Palawan. In the past, smelly badgers were referred to the marten family and were considered relatives of badgers. But recent genetic studies have proved that they belong to the skunk family, previously considered endemic to the New World. The Palawan stinky badger is the size of a large skunk or a small badger. Although it lacks the whitish spots on its back typical of skunks, predatory animals and human hunters usually avoid it because of the strong-smelling secretions that it can spray from specialized anal glands characteristic of skunks.
