IMHO, Pale Rider and The Outlaw Josey Wales are two Clint's most enjoyable movies. Clint is the avenging angel. No one does it better! I love how, when the thugs uselessly empty their guns in the general store, Clint waits for them to finish reloading before plugging them all with one shot each. Classic.

The cap and ball revolvers were still in use well into the 1880's, as the last manufacturer of revolver combustible cartridges did not go out of business until 1888! Colt Single Actions were practically impossible for the general public to get until around 1877 or so as most of the first 3 years of production were sent to U.S. Ordnance. Lots of cap and ball were converted to cartridge or just left as cap and ball. The U.S. Government was gradually selling off all the cap and ball revolvers still retained in inventory, so it was possible to buy a decent condition cap and ball revolver for around a quarter of the cost of a new cartridge gun well into the last part of the 19th Century.

A Clint Eastwood western has a formula, tried and true through the decades. And think of how many movies. And fuck me but they're all great, how is that possible? Sorry John Wayne but Clint is the greatest western film star. It ain't even close. The pinnicle artistically was "Unforviven" of course. Less heavy on the revenge and good over-coming evil, but still Clint kicks everybody's ass at the end. The audience demands that, they always will. So for all of Eastwood's formula westerns I like "Pale Rider" the best. And that's saying a lot because there are so many. Why? The vicarious thrill watching the bad guys get killed in "Pale Rider" is the most intense.
@brianmallen8887

Last thing about the auter supreme Clint Eastwood. I promise. Yeah, I consider "Every Which Way But Loose" and "Any Which Way You Can" to be "Westerns" too. And the "Dirty Harry" films, throw "Play Misty For Me" in there, and "Coogan's Bluff," they're modern westerns, Clint Eastwood practically invented the genre. John Wayne don't compare, despite "Branigan" or "McClintock."
@chandie5298

Okay.... I lied, I got one more thing to say, one more things to say. It's about the concept of "The Western" itself. There's violence in every "western," am I right?" Lot's of it usually. Not a judgement, just an observation. So that would lead to the supposition that historically there was more violence in the west than the east. Or south, or Midwest. Maybe the "concept" of that was that dirtier deeds could be done in isolation "out west." Conflicts with indigenous Americans pushed westward with manifest destiny. But the nuts and bolts of the most popular "western" stories; The Earps, Doc Holliday & Billy the Kidd, that kind of violence coulda and probably was happening in every square corner of this here United States. So I think the idea or mythic sensibility of the violent side of "The West" is a myth.
@chandie5298
2 жыл бұрын
@@brianmallen8887 This stems from the hope/mystery of "moving west. And people were hungry for tales of the west....so authors filled that need. Western films are the natural evolution from western novels. Was there more violence in the west than the east? I cannot claim to "know" but I would think it is VERY likely. In eastern cities/towns.... there was a much more robust and stable infrastructure, police force and all levels of govt...the court system etc etc Was it exaggerated? again that is probably the case, however there are many historical accounts of the violence in western towns and there is no reason that there would not be even more documentation (news stories etc... court records) of violence in the east.....

@@kimmorrison9169 Trouble with English reading context I see. I drive/ have a 2003 GMC ENVOY, pewter (or is it SILVER??!!)in color,4 wheel drive,4 door etc; Also known as an AUTOMOBILE,S.U.V. TRUCK/CAR,CONVEYANCE,RIDE. But I and everyone I know just calls it a CAR. I have footwear with,heels,metal or plastic shanks and steel toe protectors made of leather,artificial leather, W/ laces,eyelets ,hooks,velcro,bucke fasteners,canvas or other textiles, of diff. color(s),some specialized in their use, BUT I JUST CALL THEM SHOES! I understand you are just passing along info someone might not be aware of. Me TOO. Or is that; ALSO,AS WELL, ADDITIONALLY,TWO or TO. A DUSTER is a (kind of) specialized apparel,but never-the- less it is still and FIRSTLY a coat. A Duster is also a model of car and a tool for clearing dust away,or the person performing the task. Take SPANISH (language) for instance. Spanish speakers say; CASA BLANCA (House,white) English speakers; White House. Spanish: correct order English: false order One has to HAVE a house BEFORE it can be white. DOORS: Overhead,roll-up,bi-fold,louvered,sliding,left-swing,right-swing,revolving,dutch,windowed,windowless,steel,wooden,fiberglass,screen,trap, etc; But I don't say," Come through my steel door". Do you? If one doesn't know the proper name it's ok to use the general term. Miss,Mrs.,Mr. he,she him,her,boy,girl,dog,cat. I have a pet CATthat happens to be nomenclatured breed of SIAMESE. I have a Fish Tank not a Guppy collection. Ain't language grande? 🙈🙉🙊 🙂✌❤

The best parts of that hickory scene are: 1) The bucket of water failing to extinguish the lit match. 2) When Clint tosses the stick away at the end it hits the supine cowboy right in the nards.
