The thin nylon tents pitched on sandy ground heat up quickly in the early May sunshine, a reminder of how little protection those who stayed behind in southern Gaza have against the nightly bombings and impending combat.
While the UN agency in charge of Palestinian refugees says some 110,000 people have fled eastern Rafah, families in other districts of the city have stayed behind.
“This place is crowded with tents, there is nothing to protect us, there is intense fear and terror in our hearts,” said Youssef Al-Zahar, a father of seven. “We were not able to move from this tent because we have no money and no car to transport us.”
