Palmanova perfectly retains its appearance as a fortress city and is famous for it's nine-pointed star shape formed by three concentric walls, two of them built by the Serenissima Republic of Venice and a third, the most external, added by Napoleon at the beginning of the 19th century.
Palmanova is one of the most important models of military architecture in the modern age.
From July 9, 2017, Palmanova is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The heart of the city is the lively central square (Piazza Grande), but a visit to Palmanova is only complete after a walk on the ramparts and through the old (now dry) moat.
