Pam Ayres is thoroughly deserving of a knighthood [is there a female equivalent?]. She's a peerless national treasure. She's such a professional that she manages to give the impression that stage-work is not her regular job. She's ingenuous yet subtle and engages with her audience in a manner that invites their participation and anticipation. That wide smile, the timing of it, it's almost a command, "This is where the punch line comes....ready?" Pam is a gem, a pearl, an elixir, a tonic. Her gift for humour and knowing when the audience can fill in the blanks is a rare gift. Sometimes what she leaves unsaid is funnier. That gift is very rare..

@@barryogden1: Thanks Barry. I cannot believe I actually asked that question. I must have suffered some kind of Cerebellum interruptus. The hope that there might be one other soul on this planet who was unaware of this "female equivalent" is not a great comfort. I am inconsolable in my grief at displaying such intellectual indigence. There goes 20 years of so-called wisdomhood down the drain in one fell swoop.

Here in Melbourne I was waiting in the queue to get a book signed when the lady in front, who was blind and had a seeing eye dog, approached her, Pam jumped up and treated her so very kindly. She probably took her by the arm affectionately. That lady was truly blessed that evening! Pam has a heart of gold, and the most delightful perspective on everything!

Pam, at 6:36 states that her one introduction to the Facts of Life were, "Don't you go bringing any trouble back here" without specifying what this actually meant. I had an aunt who told me that she got married to a soldier in the middle of the First World War. She was 26 and knew nothing of the Facts of Life. The only thing her mother said to her was, "take something to bed with you" again, without any explanation. Her husband, also a virgin, had the advantage of working on a farm, however and knew what the animals were up to! He was on a week's leave and it took until the last night of his leave to achieve success in that department. Nine months later, the fruits of his loins came to pass!

I was partly raised by a Grand Mother who is about as modern and open as Pam's mother and all the other ladies and gents in the place she grew up in. I remember her constantly telling me not to spend too much time with girls and to not get them into trouble, or "embarrass" them. The look on her face was priceless when i told her , don't worry Nan , we mostly talk about the lads we fancy . That moment when you realize that your Nan would rather like you getting all the girls in the village pregnant rather than talk about the lads you fancy with them . Oddly enough , i'm now her favourite . Might has to do with the fact that unlike her other grandsons , i am the only one who never got distracted enough by lads (or birds for the other grandsons) to forget her birthday, grand mother's day, Christmas , New Year, Easter , for which she always got a card, a visit and/or a present from me .
