So a great thanks for this comparison! I'm hesitant between S5 and S5II. The second model with kit lense is just twice more expensive and I had some hesitations. Now I will know that original one has the edge in quality. In addition, I know that some functions like 6k photos disappeared on S5II. I seem to not be ready to buy the S5II. And apart from all vices I'd like to have more resolution for photos. At least 33mpx. I do often landscapes. You did a good job opening the eyes on more expensive cameras to have problems too. You seem to be slavic, I spot your accent. Kudos from Ukraine!

hey Lenny, thanks for watching! Yes i love to have 4k120p on this S5iix too just like GH6. But if Panasonic does that, the price of this camera would not be the current price and quite a bit more expensive. It would be virtually a A7SIII. The A7SIII is more than 1.5x price of the S5IIx but with a few missing features and not as good IBIS.

This with the handle is a winner, had I been buying today it would be top of the list along with the newer Nikon cameras, happy with the R3 but puny HDMI port and not having even the same HDMI ouputs really bugs me. Oh and their locked lens mount (I know there was one recently but not good enough) means they peeved me off so much I will for the first time, be buying only second hand RF lenses, it's the thought that counts Canon. Edit: very very nice review mate.

oh thank you very much! Yes i think the handle is really great. it fixes most of the issue i have with external SSD storage. The only thing i want is a more robust way to secure the USB port on the camera side, in case someone bump into the connector/cable. Thanks for the review, Richard. Can't believe there is no phase detect AF when shooting in FHD at 60fps!!! This is really bad for those of us who want to shoot at 60p without a crop. Hoping this is just an oversight and will be fixed in firmware. Please, Panasonic, don't make me buy an R6 II :(
@urbanstreet_4282
Жыл бұрын
At least a technical limitation can be ruled out, I think. If the processor is fast enough to read 6k footage, then it should also be fast enough for 1080p 60fps? I mean: even a relatively old A7III can do PDAF in 60fps or higher, so come on Pansonic!
@TheRealRichardWong
Жыл бұрын
To be honest, I'm not sure if this is something that can be fixed by firmware but Panasonic has definitely heard the feedback/complaints so we will see.
@TheRealRichardWong
Жыл бұрын
Technical limitation doesn't have to be the processor though. The S5II/IIx can do 4k60 APSC with PDAF and 1080P 60 APSC with PDAF. It's the Full Frame 60fps that can't do PDAF.
@urbanstreet_4282
Жыл бұрын
@@TheRealRichardWong Yeah, maybe you are right. I mean: in the end I have no idea about the technical background. Ultimately, we can only wait and hope for the best. However, this would already tarnish my overall impression of the S5 series, since this is a feature that other manufacturers have already mastered for a long time. I have no problem going to 1080p at higher frame rates. But the AF should be good then.
@SebastianReick
Жыл бұрын
The read-out speed of the sensor is just not fast enough to process the full sensor image information PLUS the phase-detect pixels for frame rates of 50 fps and higher. Remember that for DFD, the information of the image is used, whereas for PDAF physically different pixels are required (except for Canon's dual-pixel AF). I think that this is a hardware limitation that cannot be fixed by a firmware upgrade, but I might be wrong.

FW 2.0 update I feel is the most useless of lumix, I thought they would fix PDAF lost in some modes when filming at high frame rate or optimize subject detection to be more sure without detection messed up, but the truth is that the update just adds a few features that almost only a few people need . it's not even necessary, like other camera manufacturers they don't have the Liveview Composite feature, that's not a problem for them, instead of this feature let the Constant Preview feature be available when using with flash speedlight is much better . An update that I feel is even more useless than FW 1.1

the camera had so much potential but it feels like half backed and honestly i dont think panasonic is going the route of the old lumix cameras when it comes to firmware. for example on the lumix s5 the raw firmware update was free, now you have to pay like 200$. i really dont think they will make the camera better thru firmware. the autofocus will be better on the next camera (so you have to buy, spend more money) but not by firmware. mark my word

Good question, and I don't have the official answer. But I think probably a way to keep the price of the S5II the same as the original S5. Most other brands's recent new model is priced higher than the one they replaced (like R6II, A7IV). So it's a way to avoid associating the licensing/R&D cost to the base model and keep the price the same?

I think they should have a setting to turn on/off the deep sleep mode for the S5ii. That's how you should do for the upgrade not downgrade the camera features or implement some fixes half-way And to be honest i dont like the long list of codec at all. I wish they create something like a dropdown menu when you select option A then you will only have option B C. Maybe panasonic still need some UI engineer in their team Totally agree with the realtime-LUT + original file. Why they didnt think about it. pro user use these cameras not the common iphone user Some lens maker already released 1.6x anamorphic lens but why Pana doesnt release it :(
@TheRealRichardWong
Жыл бұрын
I agree, i would love to see a on/off deep sleep selection. I don't like the deep sleep changes myself. But for long list of codecs, there is a "filtering" option, and you can also create your own list of favourite codecs so you don't have to go through them all. These are standard features for all (or most?) Panasonic cameras since S1H. Re 1.6x squeeze, i like that too, but in real world, the 1.5x is close enough and shouldn't cause issues. And to be fair, at least Panasonic has anamorphic preview/IBIS for all their mid/top end cameras for a while and they are still the best brand for anamorphic shooters.

Why no internal synch Timecode, Panasonic, why? U have it on your S1H & GH5S. Sony recently had a firmware with internal synch Timecode for the Sony F3 & Sony FX30. Can Panasonic do likewise for the S5IIX & ShII? If not, why not? Supposedly, the Lumix S5IIX is being marketed as a Cinema camera. So, step up to the plate Panasonic and give your loyal teamplayers what they need to swing at the fastball. Do u want them to make homeruns, or do u just want them to strike out? Depends on you, Panasonic what u will do about releasing internal synch Timecode firmware! 😎😎

Hi Richard thanks so much for the review. I also just picked up an s5iix in NZ - I can't seem to get my s5iix and atomos ninja to record in prores raw - have you been able to record in prores raw to a ninja? It seems to me as though Atomos needs to update the firmware for the ninja to enable prores raw to work? I have an S1 and can record to my ninja v in prores raw without a problem (I have the latest atomos firmware and the prores raw token from Atomos). Just wondering what your experience with prores raw and the s5iix is - and if I am perhaps missing some step to enable that function. Thanks so much again!

hello there! Oh i think you need the new Ninja V (or V+) firmware. It seems each new camera's RAW support need a new Atomos firmware. I've just checked Atomos's website and I don't see any new fw for S5IIx support. But it shouldn't be too far away as the camera is now just released! (it was the same back then for the S1, S1H..etc)

Sorry I can't answer as I haven't done a direct comparison with Sony using Catalyst Browse in post. But I personally prefer Lumix's approach which mainly rely on IBIS and OIS to provide most of the stablisation. Sony on the other hand is (at the moment) still mainly rely on EIS which does have quite a lot of draw back like when the original footage is shaking too much then you end up have stable but blurry footage which looks very ugly in my opinion.
