Panasonic S1 will be my next camera along with the Nikon D850 for weddings, S1R too expensive. I will buy with the KIT 24-105 and maybe the 70-200 F2.8 when it is available, they say it will be released by the middle of this year. I look forward to the revision of S1. As plenty of others have state: the best pre-production Panasonic S1R review out there yet! Excellent and quality content. I'm really happy for Panasonic. They nailed it. I've been trying to find fault with this camera. And I can't. The compromises they made were smart ones. I think they only thing remotely worth finding fault with is the price. But as this camera is geared for professionals and so packed with excellent features, the price is quite reasonable. Professionals just don't upgrade cameras often. This camera should give excellent results for plenty of years if the production version is as solid as it should be. Considering how they did with the GH5, GH5s and G9, we shouldn't expect anything otherwise. I recently saw a review of the new Panasonic 50mm f/1.4 S for the new camera and the reviewer was absolutely giddy about it! In short and in my words: a Zeiss Otus-caliber lens WITH super-fast and quiet AF at half the price AND Leica-quality certified! I saw a new video by Panasonic for the S1 and 50mm lens and it is truly impressive. And that was with the much-lesser pixel count of the S1.... I wish I can join the fun as I'm firmly in the Panasonic m43 camp. With the variety of work that I do, the quality of Panasonic m43 is more than up to the task. I know I'll get a larger format sensor eventually for higher-end work and Medium Format Phase One is at the top of my list. If Panasonic engineers are passionate photographers, the Phase One folks are fanatics! But you pay for that fanaticism as well. The Phase One 'refurbished' digital back and new camera body is 8x the price of the S1R. But those are cameras you can use for 10 years as well for high-paying jobs. When the time comes, it's going to be a tough call.... Panasonic, you have really been doing a fantastic job especially the last few years. Keep up the fantastic work and thank you for working with The Hybrid Shooter to produce excellent, informative and smart content!

I actually like this camera. I know the lenses are really expensive but I really want to get the 24-100 and the 70-200 so I can go shoot weddings. My G9 would be my secondary unit with its 7-14 and Leica 100-400.

In my G9, I use a EF 0.71 Metabones Speedbooster + Sigma 18-35 1.8, and I say: amazing combination. Better than this would be a Canon Lens L series 24-70 2.8. My opinion: SR1 is a Pro photography camera, so... S1 (the hybrid one) deserved a flip screen. With paid upgrade, we'll have HDMI out 10 bit 4.2.2. Anyway, S1 is an amazing camera.

Great review, first thought I mostly do pictures suffice it to say I think the S1 would be an excellent choice for me price point, being value reason number one, reason two file size shooting raw on the pc takes up alot of space and PC power, point two I glad they don't have an articulating screen on it purchase the monitor that you showed on the video, I had a flip screen on my Canon 60D I felt like it was going to break especially if I let someone else use my camera. This screen setup will not cover the HDMI port and USB charging port screen looks very durable. Maybe by the end of the year I may let Panasonic earn my business.

Thanks for the nice review. I like the overall form factor. I have no use for top side displays, since they take away too much of the most valuable space on a camera, the top plate. I would have rather seen another programmable dial and perhaps another function button. It will be an interesting comparison between this camera and the Nikon Z7, which currently is the only competition in my opinion. I really like the new menu system with the second tier of selections. Finally, having used both extensively, for a stills oriented camera, the tilting rear display is the better option for me. I like the centered display right behind the lens and the discrete tilt up or down without anyone knowing what you are doing. Perfect for street shooting. This is a very good first shot at a FF Professional level camera for Panasonic. I look forward to seeing what you have to say about the S1. Now, let us see what Panasonycon is going to do about the entry level price point that Canon has thrown down!!

Thinking of picking one up with the kit lens for landscape photography; love my G9 but I outgrew the sensor. Can you comment on the sharpness of the 24-105mm across the zoom range? Does it stay razor sharp as you move towards the telephoto end? I rarely shoot at 105mm but it needs to be pin sharp at 80 to meet my needs (24mm, 50mm and 80mm are my most used focal lengths). Thanks from Canada :)
@TheHybridShooter
5 жыл бұрын
I unfortunately haven't had time for in-dpeth testing of that lens, from the samples that I shot it seems to be very sharp, but I will have to make separate review. If you have opportunity to publish / print pictures in format where that resolution is visible, it is a great landscape camera.
@MrJAM-np7go

The best ergo camera I've ever seen. But I'm worrying the DFD system is quite unique, so the lens need linear motor for fast CDAF, and the bokeh pattern is needed to be logged inside of the MCU in the lens. Those might make 3rd party manufacturers harder to release L-mount lenses. I hope Sigma would release L-mount specific lenses for S-1 series and their new Foveon camera with DFD compatible lenses.

When you take a 47 MP image and upload it to the web, doesnt it have to get downsized in order to fit the file storage specification of whatever website you upload it to? And doesnt that downsizing change the quality of the picture? And most monitors arent even 4K, which is 8MP, so isnt it wasteful to have a 47 MP sensor unless you are doing wall sized pictures? Wondering if my suspicions are true or not.
@TheHybridShooter
5 жыл бұрын
That always depends on specific publishing platform. For on-line 24 mpix in S1 is more than enough. If you publish smaller pictures the quality decreases of course. 47 mpix is mostly useful for large format printing and commercial photography.

I think this "pre-production unit" is just manufacturer BS. If they think camera is ready for review and launch they will do it and this seems like a fine camera. The price however is too much to me.

No, it is not, they are actually testing new AF algorithms every day until the final FW is ready. They have to release something before the sale starts.

It’s actually a very smart move - release a camera that’s 95% ready, send to a small amount of trusted camera enthusiasts/journalists, get feedback, then make final tweaks, then go on sale without any initial issues.
@TheHybridShooter

@@danjt6668 I'm not sure about that to be honest, for example Nikon got a lot of bashing when they released Z6 / Z7 with pre-release FW that wasn't very good.

The Hybrid Shooter Well, one advantage of the articulating screen, is that the screen can be folded inwards, avoiding scratches to the screen. Also, portrait mode with tilt screen is problematic. Not even talking about Vlogging, self-portrait or shots/video in difficult angles. So, really not sure why tilt is ‚more professional‘. It seems to avoid royalty payments to Canon, which could be the main reason for companies to go for tilt.
@TheHybridShooter

I use screen protector with tilting screen, it has third axis mechanism so portrait mode is not a problem. This is really not a vlogging camera, not every camera has be suitable for vlogging.

The Hybrid Shooter Sure, that‘s why I say that I am ‚not even talking about Vlogging‘. Anyway, preferences are always subjective :-)

Comparing it to the A7iii what would you rate this camera? I know it's not fully released yet but if you get what I mean :D
@TheHybridShooter

S1 is much better match for the A7 III, S1 and S1R have much better usability and features, Sony is smaller and it has much better lens selection at the moment.

I have always been impressed by how natural the Panasonic color science is. It's simply a joy to look at its images.

I have GF1, G5 and G80 and color science is different for all of them. But all of them have consistent results. GF1: somewhat dull, but natural colors. Awesome dynamic b&w mode that is quite hard to match. G5: quite nice colors, somewhat towards orange in the dark which is surprisingly not bad. My preferred color science. G80: it seems that blues (sky) are darker and more saturated and images are rather cold looking. Works well except snow - it removes all warmth and makes shadows too dark blue.

I got used to that back when I was using aperture priority on Sony A6500, which doesn't have front dial, so it is just a habit.

Just a question :) there is a kind of electronic adapter to put m4/3 Panasonic lenses on this camera to get better reach using cropped part of the sensor? Useful feature for who is using also m4/3 Panasonic cameras and want long reach telephoto lenses for "free". You still get decent megapixel with crop I say.
@TheHybridShooter
5 жыл бұрын
No, there will be no adapter for M43 lenses because of the flange distance.
