On the banks of the river Jhelum near Srinagar, is a marvel of ancient Kashmir. This is the Meruvardhanaswami Temple, at Pandrethan.
‘Pandrethan’ is a corruption of the name - Puranadhisthana, or the Ancient Capital, as it was known during the time of Emperor Ashoka, when he built his regional capital here.
More than a thousand years later, this magnificent temple was built sometime in the 10th century (913 - 921 CE), during the reign of the Utpala Dynasty in Kashmir.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is very well preserved and a prime example of Kashmir’s ancient architecture.
Built in the middle of a water tank, with intricate sculptures of various deities on its pillars and walls, it has a two storied pyramidal roof that reflects influences from Gandhara.
Among the most historic temples in the Kashmir valley, the Pandrethan temple is certainly not worth missing!
