Thank You for sharing and posting. Awesome looking pickup of Kirby's Artwork. Mr Kirby left a great legacy of art for us to enjoy for decades to come.

That colored border on every page would drive me crazy. About 15 years ago I was introduced to Kirby by Erik Larsen. I began buying back issues that were affordable ($10 or less) and in a fairly short time I had the bulk of his work from the 70’s and some 60’s stuff. Reading through those issues was a very special, unrepeatable time in my life. I get a vicarious thrill and a bit of jealousy as well from hearing of someone else embarking on that journey.

I love Stan and Jack's old comics! When I first started reading them, yeah, I found them a bit over the top and I did get tired of it. But I kept at it. I don't even notice it anymore and I love it. It's great. Sometimes I'll read 10 issues straight and I'll take a pause. Two weeks, max.

Looks like a decent overdose of Kirby's Marvel work. You could concentrate on any single decade of his work and still have a daunting task assembling a collection. The Simon and Kirby collaborations are just as rich to me as the Marvel stuff; their early romance comics are so much more intense than the later, more familiar, saccharine love comics, and Boy's Ranch is an amazingly well-done book, at least the issues Kirby has an artistic hand in. The one quality of Kirby's Marvel oeuvre you only get a taste of is the way he built longform story arcs, creating wild new characters and concepts along the way. The experience of reading classic isolated Thor comics from the mid-sixties is great, but thirty consecutive issues from, say, 130 to 160, can be truly staggering. If you can get ahold of the cheap Marvel Essential books, it may be worth a look, but it also may pull you into the vortex of Kirby Collecting.

If this book isn't enough I would recommend the 2 DC omnibuses of Fourth World and Kamandi. They are solo Kirby so you might enjoy the more. Fourth World is my personal favorite Kirby stuff. Fair warning though, this might lead into buying some Kirby Artist Editions, which are spectacular. Also the extra border in the King Size book is because of the art ratio. To blow the art up that big top to bottom they needed to have the extra border on the sides. Something to do with book production. Or at least that's what a Marvel editor said on a message board.

yes, I assumed that it has sth to do with the book production... even though it's a bit strange

This looks like a sample of too many different things, to me, as a beginners intro to Kirby. But I have been circling around buying this monster for a few years now!

I liked the variety and had great fun with it so far. But for someone like you it should be a no-brainer.

great we finally got to see your take on the father of superheroes. The mass of his comics is indeed overwhelming and stan lee's writing's fun though I can't read too many issues in one sitting. - as to the book: I can understand your "complaints": The sides are a bit irritating imo (esp. in the case of !kirby!) - I always wonder if the artist ed might be the better choice. But to get the colored silver age goodness it's near perfect.

I don't know why they had to do these colored edges... maybe it was just a trick to make the book even bigger... maybe it was just the brainfart of some designer - but tbh it doesn't bother me too much. I really hope that this thing works for me as the one - book- kirby-section in my collection (the silver surfer aside)... Artist editions and stuff like that would be far too "extra" and particular for someone like me who cannot deny a certain reservation towards these comics.

It’s exactly like an itch. You can certainly live with only one big compilation of Kirby. But the more you know about the man, listen to him talk in old interviews and come to understand his genius, uniqueness and unbelievable work ethics, the more the absence of his comics on your shelves itches you. I can only say that the itch was really an annoyance for me in my life, and now I have the majority of his work I itch no more, and it feels really good. So for me it was worth collecting everything Kirby in the end. (I am what I call a 90% completist) Having looked at the path of other Kirby collectors, I can say that you should stick with that book and never read about Kirby again. If you do, you will eventually want more and more. There’s no escaping it. But then again, it may already be too late.
