I love pan pastels. i’m just learning them. I love how soft the animal fur looks. Watching you create animal art is mesmerizing to me. I’m on your patreon channel, and I’m so glad I am, as your teaching technique is outstanding!

hi Jason, you're awesome :) You address so many points that advanced artists might take fro granted and forget to mention or to elaborate on - Even about how many layers; how long the underpainting takes; 'don't worry about exact colours'. It's not rigid rules, it's just that as a newbie it helps to know - 'oh, be patient, in a few more layers you'll really see this' etc. :) (as we get used to papers, or how different pastels work) . The microfibre tip for cleaning between is great - PanPastel and others suggest paper towel, but I haven't found it works so well. I'm wondering how you choose the colours you do - I think once you said the darkest you see in each area? I would love to hear more on this or see it in a video. (maybe you have done this). And for the brighter and lighter colours, I seem to find it hard to get to them if I have a dark underlayer - should I keep layering, or __?? Thanks for this and all the work you do! Also going to subscribe. :)

Would it be a good idea to "lock" the first layer of panpastel with fixative, before adding the next layers with pastel pencils? Would that approach allow for more layers?

If I have filled the tooth of the paper and need to make changes in that area, I erase as much of the pastel as I can. Then, with a soft paint brush, I apply a thin layer of Liquitex clear gesso. That adds tooth and I can go back in with new pastel work.

Love this technique for underlayers - beginning to see how to start off. Are you using pastel pencils for the top layers or coloured pencils eg polychromos?
