Unripe papaya is excellent for making salsa for eating with chips. Just dice it up together with tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, garlic, cilantro and add lemon juice, guava or orange juice and a little tapatillo sauce. It's amazing. I discovered this after being disappointed that a green papaya refused to ripen and I didn't want to throw it away. Now I use green papaya for many things.

I was given a tiny Papaya plant & decided to plant it in the corner of one of my raised vegetable beds- well it got this black fungus on the leaves & fruit so I went on a mission to learn all I could about Papaya trees. I treated it ( totally Organic) & have picked around 35 fruits so far with about 20 left to go- Papaya Jam / Mango & Papaya Chutney/ Papaya Relish & the list goes on- I am about to plant 2 more trees from my seeds which have sprouted from this original tree. I live in Brisbane Australia, which is sub-tropical & seems to be the perfect climate for them, I have just found your channel & will be watching. Cheers Denise - Brisbane Australia

This is a very well made and well edited video. The topic is important to us who do not live in the tropics or sub-tropics since, in most cases, we are not familiar with all of the aspects of the papaya. I have seen them for sale in the Asian stores in my region, but was never really comfortable in buying one. I think this is one of the exotic fruits that should be more a part of our diet since by all accounts it is healthy and has a many uses. I would give this video an A+ and a Like for sure.

We couldn't agree more! TFGSF has been working hard to let the public know about the great fruits that are grown here in Florida. But we could use some more help. Please let your produce managers know that you want Florida grown fruit. not imported. In that way, you will get the freshest fruit available and at the same time, help to support Florida farms. Re:strawberry papaya, Yes, we have heard of that variety. It is not suited to the soils and other conditions in Florida. Thanks! TFGSF TFGSF

@gengorudder in commercial plantations typically 8ft apart, some varieties can be planted closer, and in some places 10 ft apart. they like lots of sun, and MUST NEVER grow in standing water, safe bet is to plant them on a raised mound of well drained fertile soil.

"The papaya is the fruit of the plant Carica papaya. The papaya is believed native to tropical America. There are two types of papayas, Hawaiian and Mexican. A properly ripened papaya is juicy, sweetish and somewhat like a cantaloupe in flavor. Although Mexican papayas are much larger than the Hawaiian types, the flavor is less intense than that the Hawaiian papaya." quoted from: Beauty Fruit for Lady - Papaya (Mugua)

I didn't know that papayas were commercially grown in Florida. How come every time I buy a papaya at Publix or other Florida stores, they're always from Mexico? As Floridians, we would prefer supporting our Florida growers and buy locally produced products, but it seems we don't have that choice. Ever heard of the Strawberry Papaya? I tasted some in Hawaii and they're much better than regular papayas. This variety might be good for your operation too.

@rbaker02 Usually green papaya will not ripen - it will stay green once picked . Green papaya is not sweet and is most often used as a vegetable. Once the papaya has started to get a little yellow color to it on the tree, it can then ripen off the tree into the sweet, delicious fruit.

@melodydamor
12 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it is not the Mexican papaya, which I can get from the market in Southern California. I found some photos of the Hawaiian papaya online, that has yellow flesh. So, to answer to your question, the exact name should be "Hawaiian papaya". Or if there is other official name for it, I wouldn't know though.
@melodydamor

I don't know about Central American countries. I came from Taiwan. I remember those papayas I had at my childhood, were yellow flesh. They taste better than these orange fleshed papaya, which taste bitter. The yellow fleshed papayas are the same yellow color inside and out. I can't find them in the market here at West coast of The States.

Actually, papayas do not grow on trees, they grow on plants classified as herbs, like basil and parsley! But they do LOOK like trees, with the brown trunk, and leaves on the top. In Florida, papaya, plants do not last but a few years before productions declines. Once the trees starts to produce less fruit, the farmer will cut down the plants, and then put seed in the ground to start the next production cycle! Thanks fro your comment. TFGSF
