How do you actually play paradiddles? It really doesn't have to be a mystery. There are some very specific hand techniques you need to work out, and I talk about what those are in this video. Tommy Igoe pointed out that paradiddles aren't about throwing the sticks down and hoping that they land in the right spots. You are the one that's in control and you're placing the strokes exactly where you mean to place them.
Today we're going to practice the paradiddle through the Dire Straits song "Sultans of Swing." There is a great paradiddle between the bell of the cymbal and the snare at about 4 minutes and 20 seconds into the song. This is David "Pick" Withers on drums, and it really is a fantastic use of the paradiddle rudiment.
