I think sometimes heroes in stories can be a bit different. Like, they might use revenge, hate, or clever tricks to do what's right. It's not the usual hero stuff, but in some stories, it works. It's like they have their own way of being heroes, even if it's a bit unusual. Like you said Heroism is a matter of perspective. Even though we know that God is all merciful but he wasn't even able to fulfill this quality at that time. In one way we may say Satan is a hero but if we try to match his actions with the conventional definition of a "Hero" then it might differ. btw Thank you so much ma'am this playlist is very helpful. ❤️❤️

Yes Ma'am, the way you describe about heroics or heroism, related with speech, and in here related with Satan is appreciable, because a person cannot be considered heroic by his words but by his deeds. In here Satan cannot be called a hero of Paradise Lost because his deeds are extremely evil, even though his words sounds great. Thank-you M'am

Milton's Hell is not just fire and darkness, but also paralysis, and in this respect Satan reminds me very much of Rowling's Sirius Black, who said of his own imprisonment, "I think the only reason I never lost my mind is that I knew I was innocent. That wasn't a happy thought, so the dementors couldn't suck it out of me... but it kept me sane and knowing who I am... helped me keep my powers..."

@@NibblePop A few days ago, I learned the word "aristeia." This epic convention keeps falling out of my vocabulary, so I'm mentioning that while in Classical epics, when a character experiences aristeia, they're usually performing superhuman martial feats, such as when Diomedes, filled with power by Athena, bests not only enemy soldiers but also the very Gods themselves. Satan's aristeia is just being able to move. As someone who has chronic pain and fatigue issues, I appreciate that. I really thank Milton for introducing the fact that sometimes just getting out of bed is a superhuman feat worthy of being called an aristeia.

@Nibble Pop, do you think that Satan's intense hate of good is fuelled by his opposition to GOD and not good itself? What I'm asking is, if Satan wasn't so rigidly opposed to God, would he still hate good? Because his main motive, as you exemplified while talking about Satan's second speech, is to defile God and stop him from appearing good. In my opinion, he wasn't so rigidly opposed to God, he wouldn't have hated good so intensely, because his hating of 'good' is inherently spurred on by his hate for God. He doesn't inherently hate good. Just a little observation that I made, but would love to hear your opinion on this. Thanks for the explanation!
@NibblePop
3 жыл бұрын
True. In fact I have this feeling that his intense hatred for God is actually a reflection of his intense desire to be with him . His hatred is because of the fact that God chose his son and not Satan, that God loves men and not Satan. Just like a neglected child who hates the parent because he has no option to love them any more.

Hello ma'am. I know I am terribly late but I am finally in my third semester now and one of the chief attractions I had before getting here was listening to your video lectures on Paradise Lost. Like always you have peaked my interest through your amazing detailed explanations and I am having a hard time to put down my phone because I just can't get enough of them. Thank you for making English Honours so enjoyable for all of us . Ma'am as and when I was listening to your lectures today, in my mind came up with a few questions and thus I interpreted the answers too but I am not sure if I am thinking the right way so it will be extremely kind of you if you please help me confirm it . I couldn't stop myself from admiring Satan and I know it should not be the case considering Milton never wants to portray him as the hero but you also mentioned heroism depends on perspective. Satan's heroism might not have been recognised by the Puritan perspective but what if there was really something in him that made God view him as a threat? We know about Lilith and how she was demonised for she refused to submit to God and his principle that she was inferior to Adam. Can it be the case for Satan too ? The forbidden fruit that was prohibited to consume was also the fruit of knowledge. What if Lucifer had come up with his own theories about cosmos and other laws that did not resemble God's ? I might be wrong but the story stating Lucifer being arrogant of his beauty and thus being banished from heaven seems very childish to me. But like you rightly said, we should not trust or judge a person too quickly just on the basis of his words that too when he is using them for convincing anyone. I completely agree to that too which makes me torn about whom to place my trust on because I have never believed in the term good or evil considering it all depends on circumstances and perspectives. At the same time ma'am, I loved the point you made that God needs evil too for delivering his justice. But doesn't that make him someone who is trying very hard to seek glory. If Satan was truly that dangerous for mankind at all why not eliminate the threat altogether? Is it truly worth the risk just for the sake of establishing the power of God? What if Satan had come up with the knowledge where man didn't need to rely on God anymore at all to sustain themselves? Maybe he offers humans the hard realistic life where the consequence of making a mistake is defeat or even death giving no room for miracles like God ensures. The line where you said the volcano might have a lot of mineral in it but it only brings disaster does that also symbolically imply that knowledgeable efficient humans might have a lot of talent but they bring chaos by challenging the conventional social order? Similarly yet again we see God giving them strength to free themselves knowing fully well it's a big looming danger for his other children. This is the part where my mind stands divided. And if I go by the logic that God does it to punish Lucifer further than which punishment is he talking about? Also last but not the least, are the dialogues given by Satan in 'Paradise Lost' a part of the orginal Bible too? If it is so, does it mean Satan can have his side of story too which Milton refuses to hear because of his Puritan beliefs?

I don't think so, that a person (John Milton) who presented himself as "England's Prophetic Bard" he can present Satan as hero in his writing. Miton says in line# 25&26: "I may assert Eternal Providence, And justify the ways of God to men." In the crux of his epic poem Paradise Lost he is saying that he is going to justify the ways of God to men. Hence, he cannot show God's and as well as men's greatest enemy as hero.

Mam,after listening the speeches of Satan, what impression has been gathered in my mind is like a proverb 'broken pitcher sounds louder' in bengali, "ভাঙা কলসী বাজে বেশি" ( though I have tried to transform in English, even don't know whether it is right or wrong!😅) So,in the case of Satan, the situation is like that as far as I have observed. Satan also know the power of God is more superior than him, yet he don't want to admire God as he know he himself has shortcomings where God is flawless and by comparing himself with God, actually he wants to hide those setbacks.(I guess)

Mam could you please explain Briareos and Typhon as epic similes
@NibblePop
3 жыл бұрын
Briareos was an ancient storm giant with a hundred hands and fifty heads. He was more specifically a god of sea storms. Typhon was The last son of Gaia, fathered by Tartarus, known as the "Father of All Monsters",defeated and imprisoned by Zeus in the pit of Tartaros. He was the source of devastating storm winds. Both Briareos and Typhon represent huge monsters. Milton compares size of Satan to these monstrous giants. Secondly, he also makes a secondary comparison of Satan's evil mind and destructiveness to these ancient monsters. Additionally, these references expand the scope of the poem making it a truly epic simile.
