From Bendeth himself: "Vinnie paul snare, crushed room mics, a circa 1974 transformerless ADR compex limiter, AMS reverb stereo, SPX 90 reverb mono, SSL 4000 E series console and a few home made samples added in for good measure. Heat to Boil then simmer, Stir lightly and serve." "I would say for the drums including ancillary tracks like mono drums etc about 18-22 tracks. I cannot count all the mics I want to guess about 14-16." "Slight room micing can also be mixed it for ambience, watch the phasing. I like the 414, u87 and u67 for alternatives"

indeed, there’s a ton of substantial creative work in their drum production almost at every step of their career - even from the most recent album - Surrounded By Spies has some interesting production choices in it. you can also add Space Monkey, In The Cold Light Of Morning, Devil In Details to the list from earlier years. Sleeping With Ghosts’ title track has one of the most memorable drums sound as well. it would be really awesome to see one of them broken down in future episodes.

Original recording has way more reverb on snare (sounds like a send) and a lot more compression, especially on snare. Thanks for tackling Paramore's drum sound. The record Brand New Eyes has one of my favorite drum sounds ever.

It’s nice to hear the element you’re talking about in isolation and then blended in to the snare or whatever, but I always want to hear the it muted and unmuted a couple of times so we can hear what it’s adding to the final sound

Carla’s an old and dear friend of mine. Seems like I asked her about the sound of that particular record, and here’s what I recall: Old Ludwig kit, 22/13/16/6.5x14 Supraphonic. Kit was close miked AND room-miked like the Bonham stuff. Probably 2 or 3 room mics, which sound like ribbons. Room was small- to mid-sized. I’d guess one of the microphones was possibly lower to the floor. The big intro was mainly the room mics thru a Distressor (or some sort of analog tube crunch), and the change in sound is shifted to the closer mics, and the crunch is sort of backed down. Carla is truly amazing. Superb musician. Always was. And a very sweet person.
@Luka38

@@thesoulboy7976 Thanks for the info! Other then the room mics into a Distressor, seems like a pretty regular kit and setup, it just goes to show what an amazing drummer Carla is to make it sound so unique and groovy. I could listen to that song's isolated drums track on loop for days!

@@xdoctorblindx It's not baseless, the loudness wars a very real thing & it's based around trying to make your music as LOUD as possible to grab attention rather than just conveying whatever artistic merit it has. 5DB of dynamic range for modern music is fucking shit.
