This old guy here suffers from escapism and withdrawal symptoms. He could not get on with the modern world and time, this is why the world shown in this video are traditional and old-looking. It was his dying wife who woke him up and he began to face the reality that his place in this world disappear a long time ago. Basically, courage to break free from escapism and addiction.

Interesting that with the same surname and similar situation, he manages to break free from the curse that afflicted Evangelion's Gendo Ikari, and like Shinji rejects the false reality.

1:57 the most glorious moment in anime history. Oh man, why wasn't that song included in the Paranoia Agent soundtrack??!! Susumu Hirasawa is a musical GENIUS!

The song Kingdom has already been used in two of his albums already when the show was made, 1995's Sim City based on his journeys in Thailand, and a remix in Switched on Lotus, a 2004 album written in honor of his transgender friends having passed away. The version used in Paranoia Agent is the remix, and you're absolutely right gosh dang it, it should have been in the album

Yes. His name is Satoshi Kon, and unfortunately he passed away in 2010 from cancer. The release of his latest and last film Dreaming Machine has run into complications due to his death. But I've heard that his wife and the studio are doing their best to make sure that this film is finished.

You probably watched the anime by now XD but no his wife is alive until the last episode. I don’t understand why he acted withdrawn around her he wasn’t holding a grudge about the miscarriage.

7 years later... He was disappointed with his life full stop. His marriage was not happy- they lost a child and his wife blamed herself for years. He was fond of the times when life was easier. He lost his job. Life was still hard with his wife being very ill, and he probably resented her, although he never openly said it.

@@Xxsorafan He never held a grudge against the wofe for the miscarriage, but he still felt disappointed and disillusioned. I think one thing was not holding a grudge, and another feeling crushed by life in general. He always acted supportively to his wife, but he himself struggled- wanting to have a better life and living in the past, when things were easier. He loves is wife deeply, but still lived the monotonous life day after day. When thye married, they were young nd he probably imagined they would overcome all obstacles. In a way they did, but not in a way he imagined. Maybe sometimes he had wished his wife had died or that their life was different, less burdened. The feeling of disappointment (in himself, in life, in wife's illness) and love for his wife are not exclusive. I think he found it easier to get occupied with work so that he didnt have to think of the bleak reality.

no, while he's escaping due to the influence of Moromi, she's dying on the surgery table, and somehow reaches him through the aether as she dies.
