I'm very interested in this topic and would love to study it. How did you get involved in writing about and researching paraphilias? How would one go about researching this at a post-undergrad level? I would love to hear your path and tips.

Hello Pearl Girl, I got into this work as a counselor many years ago. Working on becoming a more effective counselor, I started to read about paraphilias and work with other professionals and clients who were in distress. I also received a masters degree in counseling and became licensed. When I left the field to teach full time in the criminal justice program, I brought that counseling experience as well as the research I had conducted as a sociology doctoral student. I worked with a psychologist and a few students along the way- as a team. There are many ways to study the field, whether from psychological, sociological, legal, etc... I think the key is working with other professionals and using the research from multiple disciplines. Hope that helps. Mark

"Current and Future"? Where are the projections regarding what paraphilias might come into existence in the future?

Yes, I seem to have missed the future predictions. The rapid changes with technology has made if very difficult for me to predict with any precision. My guess is that technology will continue to influence in various ways but I am not sure how and am not sure how the cultural and social factors will impact definitions of paraphilias.

Mark Winton Do you believe that some of the subtypes may become more accepted in our society in future? Like incest or pedophilia? We see quite a few liberals talking in favour of accepting them. They sound very appalling now but may not necessarily face the same kind of criticism in future. Is that what you mean?
